CPCCBC5018A: Assessment 9

What you have to do

To complete this assessment you will need to find a reinforced concrete or reinforced
concrete/masonry framed building of medium rise either under construction or completed.
If you are unable to view an appropriate building, you may need to access images from the
internet, but you should first discuss this with your teacher. Either way, the images you
collect must be consistent with the building required for this study. For example, don’t
include the detail of a portal frame roof when the building is a medium rise, reinforced
concrete building.
You are reminded of the WorkCover Authority requirement to have completed an approved
National OHS Construction Induction Training course including the unit of competency
CPCCOHS1001A – Work safely in the construction industry, generally referred to as the
“white card” before entering a building or construction site. This does not apply to completed
buildings.
The structure of your report is detailed below. Your report should include graphics, (photos
or sketches), wherever possible. Don’t forget to label or annotate your sketches and photos.

Task

Footing system

 Study the photographs provided and briefly describe the type of footing system that
has been used for this medium rise building.
 Sketch a section through a typical footing system of this type, showing typical
components/features.

 In the photograph below, there is provision for directing stormwater away from the
building footings. Produce a sketch that shows a section through the finished
retaining wall and label all of the relevant components.

Structural system

This building uses reinforced concrete for the frame.

 Using simple sketches, describe how such a frame supports the load of the
building.
 Sketch some details of the types of connections between the structural members eg
footings to columns, columns to beams, beams to floors, etc., and briefly explain
how they contribute to the stability of the frame. The photographs provided may
help you see the main components of the frame. (Note: your sketches should show
correct proportions for the relative size of members that would be typical, and where
reinforcement would be located in these structural members)

Floor system
 Describe the floor system that has been used (upper levels).

 Detail the construction sequence to produce this component of the structural
element.
 In the photograph, the laying of the reinforcement is not yet complete. How many
layers of reinforcement will there be in the floors? Why?
 Look at the photograph below. What information is provided on the tag? Why is
this necessary?

Wall systems
 Find a similar building in your area (reinforced concrete frame with brick or
blockwork wall panels). Provide photographs of the wall system(s) utilised in the
design of the structure. Sketch construction details not able to be recorded in the
photographs (e.g. sketch a section through a wall from one floor to the next,
showing flashing details, insulation, linings, etc.)
 Do the walls add to the structural stability of the building? If so, how?

Services
 For the building you have chosen, investigate how stormwater is controlled in and
around the building. Describe the overall concept and report on guttering,
downpipes, pipes, tanks, ‘ponding’ areas and detention/retention tanks.
 Also detail the services supplied to the building you have chosen. Show using
photographs the connections for power, water, gas, fire, communications, etc.
 Detail the requirements for ‘fire stops’ to all penetrations, with reference to the BCA.
Provide sketches for two different methods of preventing fire spread through
penetrations (a very good reference may be found at
http://www.pfpa.com.au/docs/buyers%20guides/PFPA_TG_Fire_Stopping_Part_A.p
df?phpMyAdmin=ZlesLyIQHdlTOtrt-8XBatCVvU6 This is a document called Fire
Stopping of Service Penetrations produced by the Alliance for Fire and Smoke
Containment). What Australian Standards are relevant to these methods?

Roof system
 Suggest what the structural roof system is for your chosen building. Provide a
sketch of a section through the roof and label the components.
 Indicate the type of roof cladding used. Research and provide information on the
type of cladding connections, installation and support details where appropriate.
 Sketch the gutter detail for the building and include details of any
relevant/necessary flashings to prevent the entry of water into the building.

Quality
 Read relevant parts of the Guide to Off-form Concrete Finishes produced by
Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia (it is available on the internet). What
Class(es) and type of surface finish are present on the building you have chosen?
Provide photographs if possible.
 Why is it necessary to use clean formwork that is in good condition? Why should
forms be cleared of all dust and debris before concrete is poured?
 What is the Australian Standard that is relevant to concrete finishes? How are
concrete finishes categorised?

Note
Your report should address all of the above points and be appropriately formatted. Keep
your responses concise; each section should be about 2 to 3 pages long.
