School and Community Events Reflection

As an educator, I believe it is important to be actively involved in school and community

events. By volunteering in several school and community events, each allowed for me to make

connections with those around me. This included making connections with my students during

school events. As well as making connections professionally with fellow educators,

administration, and community members. Participating in these events during my student

teaching provided me with great experiences to become a fully rounded teacher and community

member.

One of the first events that occurred was my involvement with the meeting of the

school’s social worker with my cooperating teacher regarding a student in our class. This was

one of the most heartbreaking situations I have had to be apart of thus far within student

teaching. I included this within my graphic organizer because this helped me to see a different

side of teaching. Teaching students isn’t always fun or bright and sunny, there are a few darker

sides to teaching. This also allowed for me to learn protocols when a situation like this occurs

regarding a student’s well-being.

Another school and community event I attended was the Brushfork Elementary Dr. Suess

Drive-Thru Parade. This was such a fun event to attend. I was able to hand out supplies, books,

and snack bags to the schools’ students. I also establish a connection with some of the staff and

the school’s principal, who I knew before-hand. Several other student teachers and Bluefield

State students attended this parade as well. Being along side fellow classmates, building

relationships, and helping students provided me with a great feeling to be a part of something so

wonderful.
My other school and community events consisted of a faculty senate meeting, Title 1 pull

out, after school tutoring, Dr. Suess week at Glenwood, Bluefield State Graduate Fair, Glenwood

girls basketball game, and technology training. Each of these events provided me with great

experience. It also allowed for me to see what all goes into teaching in the sense of establishing a

community and participating in events surrounding my school. This will be something I seek to

create once I have found my future school and classroom.
