How to perform a paired t-test

To identify

Group 3 – an experiment of a new type of anti-hypertensive wants to measure if it

can significantly reduce the Mean arterial pressure in patients, compared to placebo,
after 2 weeks of continuous use. Data presented are post test results only, hence,
the researchers wanted to see if there is a significant difference between the 2
groups’ MAP.

We need to identify the applicable statistical treatment to our given situation.

We used the t – test dependent so that we can identify if there is a significant
difference between the 2 groups

There are 2 groups, The control group (placebo) and the experimental group (Active drug)

The control group (X)includes: 93,100,110,99,89,95,110,99,115

The experimental group (Y) includes: 81,85,90,89,99,110,100,80,89,88,92

Subtract X value with the Y value

So forth

after subtracting sum it all then the answer will be our sum of differences

Next square the D value after that sum everything then we will get our sum of squared differences

-103 is our sum of difference

18,259 is our sum of squared differences

ΣD – Sum of difference is -103

ΣD2 – Squared sum of difference is 18,259

N – Number of pairs

Our formula is

T – statistic

Sum of difference

Divided by

Square root

Number of pairs times the sum of D squared

Subtracted by sum of the D squared

Divided by number of pairs minus 1

Step 1

So our formula will be T – statistic

103

Divided by
Square root

11 is our number of pairs. So 11 times 18,259

minus negative 103 squared

divided by 11 minus 1

step 2

11 X 18,259 = 200,849

And negative 103 squared is 10,609

Then subtract next 11 to 1 which equals to 10

Step 3

Subtract 200,849 to 10, 609 = 190,240

Step 4

Divide 190,240 to 10 which equals to 19,024

Step 5

Divide negative 103 to 19,024 which equals to a t-stat of 0.005
