Taking into account the climatic conditions existing

in Europe, this standard specifies suitable
combinations of temperature and relative humidity
recognized by ISO Recommendation R 291:1963,

and testing”.

specimens which are known to reach temperature

NOTE Test specimens conditioned in the atmosphere specified

The standard test atmosphere is defined below: in 3.1 may be tested in the corresponding atmosphere specified
3.1 For use when control of temperature and in 3.2, and those conditioned in the atmosphere specified in 3.2
may be tested in ambient conditions, in cases where the resulting
humidity is necessary: changes of temperature and moisture content are known not to
23 °C, 50 % relative humidity affect the test results.

3.2 For use when only control of temperature is 7 Report

necessary:
23 °C, ambient humidity The conditioning report shall include a reference to
this standard and include the following items:
4 Tolerances 7.1 atmosphere used for conditioning, stating the
tolerances applied;
4.1 Temperature. The normal tolerance for
temperature is ± 2 °C. If a closer tolerance is 7.2 duration of conditioning;
required, it shall be ± 1 °C. 7.3 atmosphere used for the test.
4.2 Relative humidity. The normal tolerance for
relative humidity is ± 5 % r.h. If a closer tolerance is
required, it shall be ± 2 % r.h.

5 Conditioning
5.1 When the atmosphere specified in 3.1 is used,
the standard time for conditioning is a period of at
least 88 hours.
5.2 When the atmosphere specified in 3.2 is used,
the standard time for conditioning is a period of 4
hours.

National appendix A Origins of work and relationship with other British

Standards
The United Kingdom participated in the preparation of this and four other similar standards required to
enable the principle of “reference to standards” to be applied in the preparation, by the Commission of the
European Communities, of a directive concerning tanks made from reinforced plastics for the transport of
dangerous materials.
These standards are intended to be used solely for this purpose and they should not be adopted for other
applications without full technical consideration of the particular circumstances.
General considerations relating to the conditioning of plastics are covered in BS 2782, “Methods of testing
plastics. Foreword, general introduction and instructions”. There is no technical incompatibility between
the requirements given therein and the present standard. However, the usual standard atmosphere used
in the UK for conditioning plastics is 23 ± 2 °C, 50 ± 5 % r.h.
