Quarter 3 – Module 6:
Composite Figures
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-test are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for
better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity
and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests, and
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank You.

What I Need to Know
In this module, you will learn how to solve the area of composite figures
formed by any two or more of the following shapes: triangle, square,
rectangle, circle, and semi-circle. You will also learn how to solve routine
and non-routine problems involving area of composite figures. Different
activities in this module will help you analyze and solve the area of
composite figures.
The module is divided into two lessons, namely:
• Lesson 1 – Area of Composite Figures
• Lesson 2 – Solving Routine and Non-routine Problem Involving Area of
composite Figures
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. find the area of composite figures formed by any two or more of the
following: triangle, square, rectangle circle, and semi-circle.
(M6ME-lllh-89)
2. solve routine and non-routine problems involving area of composite
figures formed by any two or more of the following: triangle, square,
rectangle, circle, and semi-circle. (M6ME-lllh-90)

Area of Composite Figures
1
Composite figure is a two-dimensional figure made up of basic two-
dimensional shapes such as triangles, squares, rectangles, circle, semi-
circle, etc.
Let us begin!

What’s New
Mr. Martinez wants to buy a carpet in his living room and hallway. A
floor plan is shown below. What is the total area of carpet that he needs?

Hallway
4m
5m
Living Room

What is It
Let us analyze and identify the figures. The figures that we can identify in
the floor plan are two rectangles.

7m
6
Area of rectangle A Area of rectangle B
A=1xw A=1xw
A = 4m x 2m A = 7m x 5m
A = 8m2 A = 35m2
To get the total area of the floor, add the area of the Hallway (rectangle A) +
area of the living room (rectangle B).
A = 8m2 + 35m2
Answer: Mr. Martinez needs 43m2 of carpet for his hallway and living room.
Example 1:
Figure 1 Figure 2
12cm 12cm
12cm 12cm
A = s²
A = 12 cm x 12 cm
A = 144 cm²
7
Step 2: Find the Area of semi-circle.
Since the given figure is semi-circle, we will divide the area of circle
by two.
A = ½ (3.14 x 36 cm²)
A = ½ (113.04 cm²)
A = 56.52 cm²
Step 3: Add the area of square and area of semi-circle to find the
area of the given figure.
= 200.52 cm²
Example 2:
5cm
9cm
8
Step 1: Find the area of the bigger square.
A = s²
A = 9 cm x 9 cm
A = 81 cm²
A = s²
A = 5 cm x 5 cm
A = 25 cm²
Step 3: To find the area of the shaded region, subtract the area of
smaller square from bigger square.
= 81 cm² - 25 cm²
= 56 cm²
Example 3:
14cm
5cm
16cm
A = ½ bh
A = ½ (16 cm x 14 cm)
A = ½ (224 cm²)
A = 112 cm²
9
Step 2: Find the area of circle.
A = πr²
A = 3.14 x 5 cm x 5 cm
A = 78.5 cm²
Step 3: Subtract the area of triangle and area of circle to find the area
of the shaded region.
= 33.5 cm²

Rectangle A, the smaller one measures 6 cm by 4 cm.
A = 6 cm x 4 cm
A = 24 cm²
A = 12 cm x 7 cm
A = 84 cm²
Step 3: To find the area of the shaded region, subtract the area of the
smaller rectangle from the bigger rectangle.
= 84 cm² – 24 cm²
= 60 cm²

Lesson Solving Problem Involving
2 Area of Composite Figures
Applying the concept of finding the area of composite figures into real
life situations will provide an opportunity and help every individual to easily
visualize different composite figures.
This lesson will help you to solve problems related to area of composite
figures. As you explore this module, you will learn the different strategies
that you can use to solve the given problem. Moreover, these strategies will
be used in your real-life situation.
What’s New
The kitchen in Erick’s new house is 7 meters long and 5 meters wide. A
square pantry is connected to the kitchen area. The pantry is 4 meters wide.
What is the total area of kitchen and pantry?

Subtract the area of the swimming pool from the area of the swimming
pool surrounded by a footpath to find the area of the footpath.
A = 1008m² - 748m²
A = 260m²
Example 2
Ella has a rectangular sheet of paper with a length of 16cm and a width

A = 176cm² A = 42cm²
Subtract the area of the part to be cut from the area of the paper.
A= 176cm² – 42cm²
A = 134 cm²
Answer: The remaining area of the paper is 134cm²
What’s More
Directions: Solve the following problems. Show your complete solutions and
answers on a piece of paper.
