ViscoCIock plus - Measurement plus data storage

The ViscoCIock plus is an electronic timing unit for glass capillary viscometers used to determine kinematic
and relative viscosity. Succeeding the well-proven ViscoCIock, the new instrument features data storage
and simpler handling. The ViscoClock plus is especially designed for Ubbelohde type viscometers which
are well-known for highest precision.

The ViscoCIock plus

The ViscoClock plus automatically measures the flow time of temperature-stabilized liquids in capillary
viscometers by means of infrared light barriers: the manual measurement with a stopwatch becomes
obsolete.
The viscometer including a sample is inserted into the ViscoClock plus and immersed into a thermostatic
bath for temperature stabilization. After thermostating, the sample is pumped into the measuring bulb,
and the flow time is detected automatically. The large display enables easy read-off of flow times and
additional information: date, time, sample ID and viscometer ID.

ViscoCloc
ViscoClock plus - head

25
Automatic measurement of flow times
The ViscoCIock plus is designed for SI Analytics® Ubbelohde, Micro Ubbelohde and Micro Ostwald
viscometers. The flow time is measured automatically by two infrared light barriers which detect the
passing liquid meniscus. The repeatability of the automatic time measurement is considerably higher in
comparison to the measurement using a stop watch. Therefore some viscometry standards allow a flow
time reduction in case of automatic flow time measurement.

Properties and materials

The ViscoCIock plus can be used for measuring temperatures ranging from -40 °C to 150 °C. The stand of
the ViscoClock plus ist made of high quality polymer PPA. For temperature stabilization in a thermostatic
bath, the following liquids are suitable: Water, alcohol, glycol, paraffin oil, and silicon oil.
The electronic measuring unit is built-in to a PP casing.

Easy handling
The ventilation of Ubbelohde viscometers is managed by an electromechanic valve which makes handling
easier in comparison to the mechanical mechanism of the previous ViscoClock.

Data storage
The measuring results of the ViscoClock plus can be stored on a USB flash drive including date, time and
sample/viscometer ID. The data are stored as pdf (non-editable) and csv (editable). Alternatively, for data
transfer the ViscoClock plus can be connected to a printer (TZ 3863) or a PC.

ViscoCIock plus - The plus for your measurements

Sample and viscometer identification

ViscoClo
To allocate the stored measuring results, the user can enter 2-digit numbers to the ViscoClock plus
before measurement. These IDs – together with date and time – ensure an unambiguous assignment of
the flow times.

Absolute viscosity
To determine absolute kinematic viscosities, calibrated viscometers have to be used. To guarantee best
accuracy, viscometers which were calibrated by automatic measurement should be used. The constant
of automatic calibration can be slightly different in comparison to manual calibration, as the level of the
light barriers may not be identical to the position of timing marks.

Relative viscosity
For determination of relative viscosities, calibrated as well as non-calibrated viscometers can be used.
For evaluation, the calibration constant is not required in this case.

… easy, reliable and safe

This means that it is not only possible to simultaneously test

the characteristics of samples with greatly differing viscosi-
ties, but also to perform measurements in various capillary
sizes and different types of viscometers. This even applies to
a combination of optical and thermal scanning. Therefore,
preliminary sorting of the samples with regard to viscosity
and the size of capillary required for the testing process is
not necessary.

It is possible to “individually” allocate each sample to a capil-

lary viscometer that is currently being used by means of the
conventional MS-Windows® “drag and drop” method.

The allocation between the sample and the viscometer is

shown on the status display. ›options‹

TITRONIC® 300 - the new piston burette from SI Analytics

The TITRONIC® 300 is a perfect motor-driven burette for manual titration and
and precise dosing instrument for dispensable liquids, solvents and titrating
agents. However, the TITRONIC® 300 is not only first-rate as a stand-alone
instrument, it also thrives as the heart of a computer-controlled dosing or
titrating system.

Manual Titration
It is true that the automatic titration is gaining ground, but manual titration remains
one of the standard cost effective applications in the lab, whereever high precision
and flexibility are required.
Titration with hand controller (mouse).
Titration rate can be adjusted in five different steps to optimize the titration
speed and accuracy.
Automatic calculation of results in different units and exportation to a printer or

Titrating manually, perfectly dosing

Dosing
Beside the titration there are various routine dosing tasks that must be performed in
the lab. A piston burette is the ideal device for precise dosing tasks:

CANNON® PolyVISC® SPS Solution Preparation System

l Prepares polymer solutions for relative viscosity

measurements using weight-to-weight methodology
l Eliminates errors due to variations in solvent density
and cumbersome manual weight and volume
measurements
l Provides concentration accuracy often better than
±0.02%

The PolyVISC® SPS Solution Preparation System from CANNON

Instrument Company is a semi-automated solution preparation system
that uses gravimetric rather than volumetric methodology. The SPS can
be used with the CANNON PolyVISC® Automatic Viscometer to
provide a complete polymer analysis system.
Why Gravimetric Measurement?
When manual volumetric methods of preparing solutions are
employed, variations of solvent density with temperature can lead to
errors larger than the error inherent in the subsequent analytical
procedure. In the PolyVISC SPS Solution Preparation System, the
solvent is weighed rather than measured volumetrically, eliminating
errors due to variations in solvent density. For samples over 100 mL,
concentration accuracy is often better than ± 0.02 percent.
When solutions are prepared using the gravimetric method, the
solution concentration can be expressed in units of volume when the
density of the solvent is known. Thus, it is possible for the PolyVISC SPS
CANNON® PolyVISC® SPS Solution Preparation System Solution Preparation System to prepare solutions for procedures
written for the volumetric method.
PolyVISC® SPS components
A computer-controlled burette pump and proprietary PolyVISC SPS software are at the heart of the Solvent Preparation System.
The software permits convenient user configuration of multiple sample/solvent recipes. Other required system components
(ordered separately) include a Windows-compatible computer and an electronic balance. A number of digital electronic
balances having an RS-232 (COM) output are compatible with the SPS software package.
Solution Preparation
SPS software for Windows® makes solution preparation rapid and simple. No volumetric glassware is used. After the sample ID
information is entered, and the user-configured recipe is selected, the operator places an empty container on the balance pan.
The container is weighed and the operator adds the amount of solute specified by the computer to the sample container. The
precise solute weight is obtained; then the computer calculates the appropriate amount of solvent and adds the solvent to the
sample container on the balance. Solution concentration is calculated by the software, and all sample information is stored on
the computer hard disk drive. A sample label can be printed.

The CANNON TE-3000 Thermoelectric Constant Temperature Bath

provides accurate temperature control between –30°C and +30°C,
meeting the requirements of ASTM D 445 for measurement of
kinematic viscosity at low temperatures.
The low temperatures are obtained by built-in air-cooled Peltier cells
which provide thermoelectric cooling. No external refrigeration unit
or air/water heat exchanger is used.
Keypad Operation
The desired bath temperature and calibration temperatures are
entered digitally by means of a keypad located on the front panel.
Temperatures remain in memory even if power to the bath is
accidentally cut off. Both the target temperature and the actual
temperature of the bath are displayed continuously on a liquid
crystal display. An on-screen menu permits selection of Celsius or
Fahrenheit operation, along with several diagnostic features.
Durable Construction
The top cover of the bath contains two round holes 51 mm
(2 inches) in diameter for insertion of glass capillary viscometers or
other instruments. An additional hole is provided for a reference
thermometer or probe. A four-pane “frost-free” viewing window and
internal illumination by fluorescent lamps provide excellent visibility

Why does CANNON offer so many different types of glass capillary viscometers? constant, Range
Primarily because no single capillary viscometer is ideally suited for all kinematic Size cSt/s centistokes*
viscosity determinations. Individual analysts also have their own preferences. The 0 0.001 0.3 to 1
brief descriptions on the following page may assist you in determining which
0C 0.003 0.6 to 3
viscometer is most appropriate for your particular application. Feel free to contact
CANNON with your questions. Our experienced staff will be happy to assist you. 0B 0.005 1 to 5
1 0.01 2 to 10
Expanded Uncertainty 1C 0.03 6 to 30
CANNON Instrument Company provides expanded uncertainty data with all 1B 0.05 10 to 50
of our calibrated viscometers. This is the universally accepted statistic when dealing
with calibration data. In order to maintain A2LA accreditation, we are required to 2 0.1 20 to 100
determine and specify the expanded uncertainty for all our calibration data. 2C 0.3 60 to 300
ISO publications define expanded uncertainty as "quantity defining the interval about 2B 0.5 100 to 500
the result of a measurement within which the values that could reasonably be 3 1.0 200 to 1000
attributed to the measurement may be expected to lie with a high level of 3C 3.0 600 to 3000
confidence." 3B 5.0 1000 to 5000
Expanded uncertainty is a more comprehensive and meaningful term than 4 10 2000 to 10 000
"precision" because it incorporates all variables in the measurement process. When 4C 30 6000 to 30 000
comparing the accuracy of viscometers it is essential that the expanded uncertainty 4B 50 10 000 to 50 000
be specified. Detailed information regarding CANNON measurements and
expanded uncertainty is available for download from the CANNON website, 5 100 20 000 to 100 000
www.cannoninstrument.com. * Ranges in centistokes represent flow times
of 300 to 1000 seconds for Size 0, and 200
CANNON Instrument Company also provides uncertainty data with every bottle of to 1000 seconds for all other sizes.

Dynamic Viscosity Values

Quality/Traceability
The Table below provides dynamic viscosity values for the General Purpose Viscosity Standards from CANNON Instrument
Company. Viscosities for all standards sold by CANNON are based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST) value of 1.0016 mPa·s (centipoise) for water at 20°C (68°F).
All CANNON viscosity standards meet the precision specifications of ASTM D 445/446 and ISO 3104/3105, and are
traceable to the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). CANNON viscosity standards are manufactured and/or
certified in CANNON's ISO 9001:2000 registered and A2LA-accredited laboratory. A2LA has accredited CANNON for
technical competence in the field of calibration (certificate number 1262.01). The accreditation includes the determination of
kinematic and dynamic viscosity (including that of viscosity standards and customer samples) in accordance with ISO/IEC
17025-1999. All calibrations are based on the master viscometer procedures detailed in ASTM D 2162.
CANNON has been delegated by NIST to provide U.S. national measurement standards and to issue calibration
and measurement certificates for certified liquid viscosity reference standards.

CANNON DVR 1000 Series Digital Vacuum Regulators
®

ASTM D 2171

l Solid-State Components—Contains No Mercury

l Preset for Vacuum Viscometry per ASTM D 2171
l Horizontal or Vertical Configuration
l Convenient Keypad Controls

The CANNON DVR 1000 Series Digital Vacuum Regulators are designed for precise measurement and control of vacuum at
300 mm Hg below atmospheric pressure. Unlike other vacuum regulators, the solid-state DVR-1000 and DVR-1500 models
use no mercury.
The DVR meter displays the amount of vacuum in mm/Hg or one of nine other units of measurement selected using a keypad
on the meter.
In asphalt laboratories the Digital Vacuum Regulator (DVR) may be used in conjunction
with Cannon-Manning, Asphalt Institute, and Modified Koppers vacuum viscometers for
measurement of highly viscous materials such as asphalt cement at 60°C (140°F) according
to ASTM D 2171. The DVR is also useful in other laboratory systems where accurate
measurement and control of vacuum is required.
Two basic versions of the DVR are available. The DVR-1500 is equipped with an internal
vacuum pump and does not require an external vacuum source. The DVR-1000 uses the
customer’s in-house vacuum system.
The internal set points for the instrument gauge are preset at CANNON to regulate
vacuum at 300 ± 0.5 mm Hg below atmospheric pressure (the vacuum required by
ASTM D 2171). These set points may be altered to fit the user’s specific needs within the
DVR’s operating range of 28 to 410 mm
Hg below atmospheric pressure.
Both the DVR-1000 and DVR-1500 are
available in either horizontal or vertical
configurations (the horizontal version will
support the weight of a constant
temperature bath like the CANNON
CT-1000 or CT-2000).
The instrument housing is made of durable
enameled steel and is supported on non-slip
rubber feet.

Distillation Applications

Pro-Pak is a high efficiency distillation column packing

with unique wetting properties. Applications range
from laboratory and pilot plant distillation columns to
those used in small manufacturing plants. Pro-Pak is
self wetting, so equilibrium time is reduced —
distillations can be stopped and started without lengthy
delay. The entire surface of the packing is available for
mass transfer, contributing to its high efficiency. The
shape of the packing eliminates interlocking and
makes filling and emptying the column as easy as
pouring water.
Pro-Pak is formed from metal ribbon through which
CANNON Pro-Pak Distillation Packing more than 1000 tiny holes per square inch have been
punched. As the points of the die push through the
metal, jagged burrs are formed on the reverse side of
the ribbon. Pro-Pak’s self-wetting properties derive from a rectangular network of capillaries on the surface of the metal,
produced by the combined effect of the holes in the ribbon and the roughness of the burrs. These properties ensure that
Pro-Pak stays wet in service in the distillation column and retains its high efficiency. Because the surface area of the packing
remains effective under low liquid loadings, high column efficiency is maintained at vapor velocities very much lower than the
flooding velocity.
Pro-Pak can be used for both atmospheric and reduced pressure distillations down to 10 mm Hg condenser pressure. As the
operating pressure decreases, efficiency increases. The HETP (height equal to a theoretical plate) varies from 0.5 inch to 1.4
inch in a 1-inch diameter column, depending on operating pressure and reflux rate.
The large surface area made effective by the wettability of Pro-Pak allows for efficient mass transfer between the liquid and
vapor phases. The surface area is approximately 576 square feet per cubic foot for the 0.16-inch size and 372 square feet per
cubic foot for the 0.24-inch size. The packing factor is 693 for the 0.16-inch size and 420 for the 0.24-inch size.
High free space is especially important in vacuum distillation (for reduction of pressure drop) and in extractive distillation and
absorption (where high liquid or vapor loading is common). Pro-Pak has high free space: 94% for the 0.16-inch size and 96%
for the 0.24-inch size. Because of its high free space, Pro-Pak has a high flood rate.
In addition to type 316 stainless steel packing, listed below, Pro-Pak is also available in Monel, nickel, and other metals on
special order. Discounts are provided for bulk quantities.
CANNON manufactures special interdistributor screens and hold down screens that provide optimum efficiency for Pro-Pak
columns. These screens are manufactured on a custom basis to fit any specified column diameter.
Our Pro-Pak technical bulletin contains additional information. A free sample of Pro-Pak can also be supplied. Please contact
CANNON to receive a free copy of the Pro-Pak bulletin and a sample of the packing.

1.6 ASTM D445 High Temperature Viscosity Baths - TV Series

ASTM D445 - ASTM D2162 - ASTM D2170 - ISO/EN 3104 - IP 71 - DIN 51366

This test method specifies a procedure for the determination of the

kinematic viscosity of liquid petroleum products, both transparent and
opaque, by measuring the time for a volume of liquid to flow under
gravity through a calibrated glass capillary viscometer.

Main characteristics
Bath can be operated from ambient +5°C up to +230°C (41..446°F).
With the use of the built-in cooling coil and an external Tamson cooling
circulator, span lies 5°C above the temperature of the cold flow of the
external cooling circulator. The TV2000, TV4000(DC), and TV7000DC
have a bath volume of 20, 40, and 70 litres respectively. The TV2000
has a cover with three openings and lids. The TV4000(DC) and
TV7000DC have a cover with seven openings and lids. These openings
accommodate glass capillary viscometers in viscometer holders. The
TV4000DC has the same specifications as the TV4000, but with a
unique stability of 0.002°C at 40°C. The TV7000DC is used to calibrate
long thermometers, to calibrate master viscometers or for oxidation
stability tests. A bath overflow outlet protects from expanding bath oil
when the bath filling is expanding at higher temperatures. A bath drain
is standard included. The bath is fitted with a double window of which TV4000
the front pane is detachable for cleaning purposes.

1.11 ASTM D445 Low Temperature Viscosity Baths 40&70 litres

ASTM D445 - ASTM D2162 - ISO/EN 3104 - IP 71 - DIN 51366

Main Characteristics
The TV4000LT and TV7000LT are unique visibility baths with wide
dimensions. Working temperature ranges from -40°C up to +100°C.
The integrated cooling system is able to lower the temperature of
the bath content down to -40°C within approximately two hours. The
cooling power can be controlled over several stages, so that the heat
removal capacity is trimmed to the desired set point temperature,
saving up to 50% of energy. Due to its wide temperature range, the
bath can be used for multiple purposes varying from low temperature
viscosity measurement to calibration of sensors and thermometers.
The large windows show the bath contents clearly. The windows are
heated preventing built up of condensate. The maximum temperature
lies around +100°C. Overall accuracy is better than ± 0.02°C over the
whole temperature range. Ambient temperature drifts <0.003°C/°C.
The homogeneity is better than 0.02°C. Drift, accuracy and
homogeneousness were measured with methanol as bath medium and
are true min-max values found over eight hours. The TV7000LT can be
used to calibrate long thermometers or to calibrate hydrometers.

1.12 ASTM D445 Ultra Low Temperature Viscosity Bath

ASTM D445 - ISO/EN 3104 - IP 71 - DIN 51366 - ASTM D2532

Main Characteristics
The TLV25 system contains a 25 litres Dewar flask. The fluid in this
flask must permanently be cooled by a separate immersion cooler
when using at temperatures below ambient. The temperature set point
is maintained via a microprocessor controlled heating element. When
using the TCC-IC, a minimum working temperatures of -80°C can be
reached. All presented data is measured by using a TLV25 filled with
methanol and a TCC-IC immersion cooler. At the minimum temperature,
the provided heat removal is still enough to maintain stable tempera
ture control, even when glass capillary viscometers are placed in the
bath. The systems accuracy is better than the requirements of ASTM
D445 and ISO 3104. The bath is illuminated by a fluorescent light built-
in behind the Dewar flask. The top lid has a turn table construction
with three openings and three lids. By turning the lid, the immersed
viscometer can be positioned in front of the window. This window is
heated to keep clear sight at sub zero temperatures. The set point can
be set in steps of 0.1°C from -90°C up to +60°C (-130..140°F). Overall
accuracy is better than ± 0.04K. Set-up of TLV25 and TCC-IC can also
be used for ASTM D2532.

1.16 ASTM D1298 Density by Hydrometer

ASTM D287 - ASTM D1298 - ASTM D6822 - IP 160 - ASTM E126 - API 2547 - ISO 3675

This specific method covers following laboratory determinations by

hydrometer method:
-Density,
-Relative density (specific gravity),
-American Petroleum Institute (gravity of crude petroleum
and liquid petroleum products).

Main Characteristics
A Tamson TLC15-5 refrigerator circulates a (cold) flow through the
double walls of the cylinders. The TLC15-5 maintains the bath
temperature within ± 0.25°C of the test temperature required by the
method. The PTFE valves ensure fast drainage and cleaning of the
cylinders. The easy detachable spill tray prevents that portions of the
sample are spilled on the workbench. The rack offers full view on the
hydrometer. Our special ASTM D1298 support eliminates the problem
of mounting brackets or portions of a thermostatic bath blocking the
view. The Tamson D1298 apparatus is a complete set-up existing of
three Jacketed glass cylinders, rack and TLC15-5 circulator. Our system
offers an interesting price advantage compared to other solutions
based on a combination of a thermostatic bath with an external chiller.
The ASTM D1298 set-up can also be used for ASTM D287 or ASTM ASTM D1298
D6822 test methods. Apparatus
