6 The breakdown

When George’s car stalled at the traffic lights, he couldn’t start it again. The cars
behind him began to sound their horns, and the drivers began to shout. George got
out of his car, apologized and pushed his car to the side of the road.

A young man and his girl-friend were standing at bus stop.

“Excuse me,” said George. “Do you know anything about cars?”

The girl was about to say something, but her boy-friend interrupted.

“Leave it to me.” He said, opening the bonnet at the front of the car. “Oh
dear, it looks very bad.” He shook his head and whistled.

George was a little surprised. “Actually . . . er . . . the engine is at the back.”

“Oh.” Said the young man. “it’s a foreign car. In that case, I can’t help you.”

“Can I have a look now?” asked the girl, politely.

She took the cover off the engine at the back of the car, asked George for his
tool kit, and worked for five minutes. The car started immediately.

“Thank you,” said George. “Can I give a lift anywhere?”

“Yes.” said the girl. “To the library. I’m going to get him a book about cars.”

Characters:

1. George: George stalled at the traffic lights, he couldn’t start his car again..
George got out of his car because drivers began to shout. He apologized and
pushed his car to the side of the road. He assisted with the girl and the car
started immediately. Because of that, George give offers to lift anywhere.
2. Other drivers: The other driver can’t wait when George’s car was dead and
began to sound their horns and began to shout.
3. Young man: The young man is not a friendly and pretentious person. He
opening the bonnet at the front of the car and shook his head while whistled.
He don’t know that actually the engine is at the back.
4. Girl : The girl is a good person, she polite to everyone and likes to help
others. In this story, the girl help George to fix the car.

10 The break-in

P.C. Small, the village policeman, always walked down the main street of Little
Fontwell at midnight to make sure that everything was all right. He was especially
careful to look through the windows of Miller’s Antique Shop and Boyd’s the
Jewellers.

One night, P. C. Small was walking down the street as usual, when he saw a
flash of lights in the window of Boyd’s.

He crept to the window and saw a man with a mask taking jewels from the
safe. P. C. Small waited until the man had finished, and grabbed him when he
came out of the shop.

The policeman pulled the mask off the thief. He was amazed. It was Mr
Boyd, the jeweler.

What happened next?

The policeman and Mr Boyd talk together. The policeman asked Mr Boyd
why he use a mask and taking jewels from the safe. Then Mr Boyd said that he
want to test P. C. Small. During this time, he claimed to still doubt the security of
P. C. Smal, so he use a mask and taking jewels from the safe in his shop. After the
incident, Mr Boyd believed that his shop would be safe as long as P.C. Small, the
village policeman there.
11 The unexpected visitor

Sally Wyndham got home from work and make herself a cup of tea, as she didi
every evening. Suddenly, the telephone rang. It was someone calling from a
phone box.

“Hello?” said Sally.

“Sally! You’re home!” said a man’s voice. “I’ll be over in five minutes.” The
man put the phone down.

Sally was mystified. She had no idea who the man was. Five minutes later,
the doorbell rang. Cautiously, she opened the door.

A tall, sun-tanned man with a beard stood at the door.

“Sally! How are you? It’s me, Bernard!” he said, smiling.

“I’m sorry.” Said Sally. “I don’t know who you are.”

The man was very surprised. “I’m your brother Bernard from Australia.”

“But I haven’t got a brother.” said Sally.

12 First flight

John Thompson was very apprehensive. He was about to fly for the first time. He
arrived at the airport and checked in his luggage for the flight to Madrid. Then he
went to wait in the departure lounge.
He had been very nervous, but when he got to the departure lounge he began
to relax. In fact, he fell asleep. Ehen he woke up, he heard an announcement in
Spanish, and joined the hundreds of people leaving by gate number five. There
were so many people that it was impossible for the airport employees to check
everyone’s ticket.

When the plane took off, John had a celebration glass of whisky, and then fell
asleep. Almost immediately, it seemed the plane was coming in to land.

John got off the plane, feeling very excited. He walked into the terminal
building, and joined the queue to show his passport. Very soon, he was facing a
pretty girl wearing a blue uniform. She smiled at him.

“Welcome to Mexico.” she said.
