Purpose and Objectives

Grade Level One Subject Math Duration 60 minutes
Date Wednesday March 24, 2021
The focus of this lesson is for students to be able to provide reasoning for
Lesson Focus
their statements of comparison regarding mass.
From the Alberta Program of Studies for Math:
 GLO: Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems.
 SLO: Demonstrate an understanding of measurement as a process of
Learning Outcome(s)
comparing by: identifying attributes that can be compared; ordering
objects; making statements of comparison; filling, covering, or
matching.
Students will discuss using mathematical vocabulary.
Students will investigate mass through a demonstration of a hands-on activity.
Learning Objectives Students will make statements of comparison.
Students will reason why one object is heavier or lighter than the other.
Students will practice making statements of comparison for mass.

Learning Experience
Timing Content/Description Differentiations
10 minutes Math Talk
 Teacher will review the purpose and expectations
of a math talk
 Teacher will display an image (WODB task) and
give students time to think about it and come up
with an answer
 Once all students have signalled that they have an
answer, the teacher will start calling on students to
explain their answer
 Students will share their answers and the teacher
will explain that every student is correct
5 minutes Simon Says
 Teacher will put on a GoNoodle dance video for
students
30 minutes ‘Comparing Masses Visually’ Worksheet – Activity 10.4
 Teacher will explain the activity to students
 Teacher will have students predict which item is
heavier in each pair before testing it out on the
pan balance
 Students will complete the comparison for all 5
pairs of objects using the same process
10 minutes Math Facts
 Students will work in their ‘Fact Family’ booklets to
practice their addition and subtraction facts
5 minutes Clean-Up and Closure
 Teacher will have students clean up their
workspace – pencils away, student booklets away
 Teacher will ask if there are any questions
 Teacher will call students to get ready for recess
