Deflection of Beam
Example
A uniform cantilever beam carries a total load of W, which is distributed in the linearly
varying fashion shown. Find deflection at the right end.

Wo per unit length

Example
The simply supported prismatic beam AB carries a uniformly distributed load w per
unit length (Fig. ). Determine the equation of the elastic curve and the maximum
deflection of the beam.
Example

Deflection of Indeterminate Beam

Example
The overhanging beam ABC carries a concentrated load P at end C. For portion AB of
the beam,
(a) derive the equation of the elastic curve,
(b) determine the maximum deflection.
Example
For the beam and loading shown, determine the reaction at the fixed support C.

Assume the axial force in the beam are zero,

Apply Principle of Superposition

Example
For the uniform beam and loading shown, determine (a) the reaction at each support,
(b) the slope at end A.

Apply Principle of Superposition

Example (HW)
For the uniform beam AB, (a) determine the reaction at A, (b) derive the equation of
the elastic curve, (c) determine the slope at A. (Note that the beam is statically
indeterminate to the first degree.)
