FORMATION PERIOD
-Christianity was starting to multiply among nations.
- During this time the Gregorian chant was developed. It is also known
as plainchant or plainsong and named after Pope St. Gregory the Great. This pope
was credited with bringing it to the West.

GOLDEN AGE
-The organum was developed. It is an early form of counterpoint, which
eventually led to polyphony. 
-Musical notation began as well as the birth of polyphony when multiples
sounds came together and formed separate melody and harmony lines.
-During this time of liturgical musical drama unfolds throughout Europe. 
-It was around this time when a new method to teach singing was invented by
a Benedictine monk and choirmaster named Guido de Arezzo.
-The spread of geisslerlieder or flagellant songs. 

DECADENCE/DEATH
- Foundation was laid for the music notation and music theory practices that
would shape Western music into the norms that developed during
the common-practice era
-Polyphony as the main music of the church

RESTORATION
-Pope pius X define the Gregorian chant as the song proper to the Roman
Church and propose the Christian people to pray in its beauty. (1903)
-The Second Vatican Council with the following words confirm with its
authority the use of the Gregorian chant and to always practice them in the
Church. (1962)
-“The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as especially suited to the
Roman liturgy”. (S.C. 116)
