TYPES OF ELEMENTS :-
1) ELEMENTS OF LIVING THINGS

• The chosen of living things based on the speciality of the traits present in the imitated
animals.
• Examples : Motif Of Ayam Berlaga, Itik Pulang Petang, Badak Mudik, Kuda Laut

ELEMENTS OF MALAY CARVING
2) ELEMENTS OF KOSMOS

• Uses the images of the sun, moon, stars, clouds, mountains, hills.
• Sun / stars motif usually located at louvered screens (tebar layer) of
house

3) ELEMENTS OF GEOMETRY

• Exist after acceptance of islam in malay community


• Examples : Motif of Potong Wajik and Siku Keluang

4) ELEMENTS OF FLORA

• Usually, creeping plants


• Examples: Motif of Bunga Matahari, Labu, Balung Ayam

5) ELEMENTS OF CALLIGRAPHY

• Consist of Arabic alphabet


THE BASIC CARVING COMPONENTS

1) SINGLE PATTERN (POLA BUJANG)

• This pattern stand isolated, independent, and not bound, intertwined or


interconnected

2) FRAME PATTERN (POLA PEMIDANG)

• Consist of more than one motif but not too complicated


• Do not have movement

3) COMPLETE PATTERN (POLA LENGKAP)

• This pattern combines the features of a single pattern and a frame pattern.
• More complicated
TYPES OF CARVING TECHNIQUES

1) TEBUK TEMBUS
• Wood or carved boards are perforated, and patterns are left
• Usually use for ventilation and lighting
• Located at window lattice sections, space partitions, eaves

• TYPES OF TEBUK TEMBUS CARVING:

TEBUK TEMBUS TANPA SILAT

• A blank surface that is drilled into a hole, while the motifs and patterns
are left flat without silat

TEBUK TEMBUS BERSILAT

• Carving similar to tebuk tembus but it has silat effect on carving motif
TYPES OF CARVING TECHNIQUES

2) TEBUK TIMBUL
• Unperforated carvings
• Carved part is part of the negative pattern

• TYPES OF TEBUK TIMBUL CARVING:


• Timbul tanpa silat
• Timbul bersilat

3) LAYANG
• The carving is impenetrable and has no relief pattern on its
surface
TYPES OF SILAT

Relief carving designs that highlight carved floral motifs on wood carvings

1) SILAT BELAH ROTAN

• The perforated part of wood carving is rounded in half.


2) SILAT DADA TUMA

• There have two semi -circular curves


• This silat make carving looks more alive and stylish

3) SILAT LAPER

• Similar like silat belah rotan


• But it is wider and lower.

4) SILAT SERONG

• It has sharp corner on the edge of silat

5) SILAT MINANGKABAU

• The middle part of silat is high and sharp


• Both sides of this silat edge are lowered
WOOD CARVING
CONCEPT OF CARVING DESIGN
• Concept derived from Arabic word “FITRAH” which means purity. Every child is born in a state
of Fitrah.
• It can be seen in the hadith :-

• The concept of fitrah can be portrayed by Malay proverb ‘ melentur


buluh biarlah dari rebungnya’ which means every child should be
educated from their early age.

• The growth of bamboo has a similarity with educating a child. Bamboo is


easy to be bent when it is on its early stage which is bamboo’s shoot.
Similar to child characteristic which is easy to learn and listen to advice
from parents on their early age.
COMPONENTS OF 5) BRANCHES AND LEAVES
Will grow from the nodes.
BAMBOO •
• Provides the photosynthetic function of the plant by
converting sunlight into energy.
4) CULMS
• The most visibly distinguishable feature of a bamboo plant.
• The appearance can range from thick or thin, tall or short,
erect or bent, and can exhibit irregular patterns.
3) SHOOT
• New bamboo culms that come out of the ground.
• New culms will form at the very tip of the rhizome.
2) RHIZOME
• Horizontal stems extending from the domain plant that travel
underground with the objective of colonizing new territory.
• Collect and store the primary nutrients for growth.
• At the nodes, new rhizomes or roots can be produced.
1) ROOT
• The primary function is to anchor the culm to the ground.
• This also allows the culm to hold more weight, giving it the
ability to grow more leaves over wider distances.

5) LEAVES
• To indicate good knowledge that can guide the person to
overcome the obstacles.
4) CURVED CULM:
• To symbolize the obstacles that have been encountered by
the person
3) CULMS
• To portray a matured person that has been educated

2) SHOOT
• Refers to a pure child who has no sin

1) ROOT
• Religion as a fundamental aspect in life

• TO ALLOW VENTILATION AND LIGHTING TO COME IN TO THE BUILDINGS
