INTRODUCTION
Architectural internship is a period of work experience offered by architectural institution for
their students where students are suggested many firms in the region of their reach and they
have to make a choice according to their preferences (In the context of Nepal). However, it is
the firm’s decision whether to intake a student reviewing his CV or Portfolio.

“An internship is a period of work experience offered by an institution for a predetermined

period of time.”

OBJECTIVES OF THE PRACTICUM

Internship and rule for it differs from country to country. It depend upon the contemporary
educational practice in the country. In the context of Nepal, in the field of Architecture, the
curriculum directs an institution to offer its students a practical working experience before
completion of Bachelor program. Internships are used to determine if the intern still has an
interest in that field after the real life experience.

In addition, an internship can be used to create a professional network that can assist with
letters of recommendation or lead to future employment opportunities. The benefit of
internship to students is that they are already familiar with the company, working procedure
and their position. Internships provide current college students the ability to participate in a
field of their choice to receive hands on learning about a particular future career, preparing
them for full-time work following graduation.

ABOUT OFFICE

Firm name: CE CONSTRUCTION PVT. LT.

Location: TRIPURESWOR

How is there working environment?

In college projects, assuming our tutors as our clients we design accordingly negosiating our
ideas and tutor’s comments. In contrast, while designing for a real client, his decision proves
to be the most in design thinking. Manytimes, we have to compromise on our ideas. The
practicum teaches us how to interact with the client and how to possibly convince him/her if
his/her stipulate isn’t feasible and appropriate. Designing in a paper is relatively easy, but
during the process of materializing that design, many problems might arise which we aren’t
conscious of until those are confronted in the real construction practice. Hence, practicum
proves to be a good method to confront any problem that hinders the construction process. In
addition, practicum has many aims and objectives.

The drawing of wall section would ensure there is no confusion as to what the actual
construction of the wall should be in order to make the elevation look the same after
construction as it was imagined by the architect.

Three types of pipes; soil, waste and rain water pipes were provided. The soil pipe and rain
water pipe is generally 110mm where as size of waste pipe differs in accordance to the
waste carried by the pipe. Bending of pipe is usually done in 45 degree. The soil pipe for
every house hold is then connected to a main soil pipe which is connected to a common
septic tank.

We were given a class for water supply and drainage drawing and were shown different
types of pipes with their sizes and function.

S- trap is the trap that passes through floor which raises the floor and is not that
convenient one.

P- trap is the trap that passes through wall. P- trap is specially used because it contains P
shape and the water remains there so it prevents from bad smell.

This is Nahani Trap which is used in the cases where there is no need to raise the floor.

Learnt through doing sanitary drawing:

• Three types of pipes are used; soil, waste and rainwater pipe. Soil and waste
pipes are uPVC pipes and they are brittle in nature whereas for the roads HDP pipes
are used which are black in color and flexible.
• All the pipelines needs vent for the air pressure.
For building more than 5 storied, extra vent is necessary otherwise smell gets in.
• Rain water is also joined to the waste water man hole.
Cleaning cap is provided so that dirt is cleaned time to time.

c. Electrical drawings of B type building

An architect must also understand the electrical procedure for the ease while designing so
that it won’t become hindrance and also, the process becomes quick with layouts which
might as well guide the design. Knowing about electrical cables layout is important.
The three types of layouts were done as light point’s layout, power socket layouts, and
telephone and TV point’s layout .

Light point layout:

In these layout drawings the electrical layouts of light points are shown. The light points
were supply from the slab as well as the walls. The horizontal supply is done through the
walls and the vertical connection through slab. While supplying from the slab the pipe
were laid during the reinforcement process. As the layouts are concealed hence the
walls were cut off for the supply. The position of the lights depends upon the layouts of the
room but in most cases the switches were locate near the door. Generally the
connection in this layout was done through switches to switches, switches to lights and
from lights to lights. Here switches were connected to the DB and one switch can support
the loads of 10 lights only. In place such as staircase, lobby the two way switches can be
used.

Power point layout:

Power sockets were laid at the walls and in most cases they are place above the skirting
lines and at the level of switches. The location of the power sockets might be varying as
it depends upon the layouts. As switches the main connection of the power sockets
were also made on the DB the connection of up to 3 the power socket can be made from the
one DB. In case of high power consuming area such as kitchen, laundry, ac e.tc the 20 amp
power socket were provided which single line can be connected at the DB. The inverter
lines were also is connected at the DB.

b. Interior design (conceptual)

In the practical filed, mostly the client demand and choices are given priority. The design
in the interior is mainly based upon the client choices.

Reception area: With the design guideline, I started with the reception area, initially
with the furniture design and then overall area. For the walls, cement board panels were
used. One of the walls was highlighted with the overall use of yellow colour.

Architecture

Customer Service Area: keeping it minimal, this area was designed by simply bordering
the wall with thick simple bands of grey colour as a frame and within it keeping white portion
where the bank’s name and motto is encompassed and is focused. The area was created on a
platform giving a yellow band below it and providing it with rope light. For more
enhancement, hanging lights were added.

Initial sketch Final phase

Waiting area: Keeping theme in mind, the seatings were provided with laybacks. As
people in the waiting area would require tables to fill forms or write something, special type
of small tables were provided. The walls were left plain where the ad display screens were
to be placed.

Spill out/ discussion area: Second floor of the bank would consist of more private
spaces comprising of rooms of different managers and directors. So to have a spill out
area or discussion area for the personnels in an interesting space, this space was
designed. This space was designed as a relief space where people cant sit and work or
chat in presence of greenery.

c. Elevation/Façade design
As per the client, modern out-look of the building was preferred. For the modern look,
the major focus was on the use of glass. Fully or partially glazed façade would be the major
focus of the building façade. Not only for the aesthetics, glazed façade was also desirable
for ample admittance of light in the building since the building is able to get light from
front and rear back façade only that is east and west.

Conceptual sketches were done to bring out the form of the building through elevation
treatments and designs. As the changes were done in planning many times, this also
affected in façade treatment. However, the glazed façade of the building wasn’t
compromised.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT: OPTION 1

Initial sketch

Existing building

Comments received:

• Very plain façade

• Less use of elements

Architecture

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT: OPTION 2

Keeping the previous comments in mind, a new design was approached to add more
elements, so long vertical windows were added with complimenting C and L shaped bands.

Comments received:
• Fully glazed preferable than provide windows.
• If using bands, make it visible with thickness.

Initial sketch 3D visualization

With further modification, the façade was made light by addition of more glazed surface
than providing openings. V shaped supports were added to support the projection above.

COMMENTS RECEIVED:
▪ The v-shaped supporters are not complimenting.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT: OPTION 3

As per the changed plan; new elevation options with double height porch in front was
designed.

Initial phase Final phase

Comments Received:
• Counter Area should not be fully glazed.
• Bank’s name in the entry should be more focused.
• ATM part better not to be glazed.
• Blank wall is overpowering.

Cement Board: The material used in the facade treatment is cement

board. The cement board is used because the existing hospital side facade
is treated with the cement board. A cement board is a combination of
cement and reinforcing fibres formed into 3 foot by 5 foot sheets, 1/4 to
1/2 inch thick that are typically used as a tile backing board. Cement
board can be nailed or screwed to wood or steel studs to create a
substrate for vertical tile and attached horizontally.

Architecture

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT: OPTION 4

▪ Option 3 modified
▪ Provision of frp(fibre reinforced plastic jali) incorporated in design to block visibility of
counter area from road
▪ Use of yellow vertical elements to highlight the building

FRP(Fibre reinforced plastic)jail:

It is the panel of desired patterned mesh.

It is 40 to 50 mm thick. It is made of

Acrylic fibre.

Final Elevation option

Glass Spider Clamp:

These fittings help fix the glasses with each other and are available as 1 legged to 4 legged
usually. It is used for the tempered glasses of thickness 10-12 mm. CR spider fittings is made
of 316 stainless steel.

PROJECT 7: OUR COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

Location: Gulmi

Project type: Hospital

Project Architect: Ar. Salouna Sthapit

Planning brief:
Community Hospital is proposal of the hospital project which is located at Gulmi. It comprises

Architecture

MY INVOLVEMENT:
a. Planning of doctor’s quarter
b. Plan render of doctor’s quarter

Proposed site

a. Planning of doctor’s quarter

Plan development:
For the Doctor Quarter, the criteria was two families on ground floor and two on first floor,
total of 4 families in 1 quarter block. Whereas, in interior planning there should be 1 living
room, one bedroom( minimum of size 10’ X 12’), one master bedroom with attached
toilet, common toilet( 5’X 8’) and a kitchen to each family. Also, the area must not exceed
750 square feet which was a tedious job to do. Given the criteria, I worked on planning by
sketching first. I planned to keep living room on south as we tend to spend more time on
living room. My aim was to keep bedrooms on south-east or south- west side, so as
bedroom would be warm on mornings and evenings. Then, I’d learned about keeping
kitchen on north east side during my college days which also fits according to Vastu
Shastra. So, I gave options to the Project Architect of Doctor’s Quarter.

After making multiple options, the one below was chosen by the project architect where
she found the flow undisturbing, natural ventilation to all the rooms and fulfilling to the
criteria. However, we had to consider little exceeded area.
