Problem 1.

A)

A cantilevered beam is subjected to uniform pressure on the top surface as shown in the
figure
below. E = 31×106 psi, ν = 0.29, thickness = 1 inch, P = 30 psi.
If L = 40-inch, h = 4-inch (slender beam), use (A) 3 node triangular element (select
PLANE182 (4 node element) as element type, then select mesh to triangle in mesh tool),
(B) 8 node quadrilateral elements (use PLANE183), and (C) beam element (use BEAM188)
to find the maximum normal stress σx on the support and the displacements at the center
of the free end. Compare the ANSYS results with the analytical solution from the strength
of material

Stress in X direction:

Maximum Nodal stress in X direction: 12626.5 Psi

Stress concentration factor: (K)

From this we have, P=p*A= 4000psi*A

w= width = 4 in, r= 0.4 in, t= 1 in.

SO we get the avg stress as = 5000psi

We have the relation of k with avg and normal stress as,

Stress Concentration Factor (K) = Max normal stress / Average normal stress

So, k= 12626.5/5000 = 2.5253

Verifying Theoretical value of K from the graph:

So, From the values of r and w we can find the ratio of r, w so r/w= 0.1

So we have the value of K for r/w=0.1 as K=2.65

Results and conclusion:

% Error=(2.65-2.5253)/2.65*100 = 4.9% error

So we have obtained the results accurately with an error of 4.9%

Deformed and undeformed model:

Results verification:

Calculating stress concentration factor through ANSYS:

We have eq for avg stress as above so P=p*A= 4000*A

Where, A=2.5 in^2, h= 2.5in, t= 1in

Avg stress = 4000psi

And Max normal stress is 7502.25psi

So, K= Max normal stress/ Average normal stress = 7502.25/4000 = 1.8755

K= 1.8755 (ANSYS Analysis)

As, (r/h= 0.2, w/h= 2.0) so Actual K value from graph is 1.8

So, we have obtained the Ansys analysis result similar to the value so the
analysis is accurate.

We have % error as= ((1.8755-1.8)/1.8)*100 = 4.199 % error.

Conclusion:

From this analysis we infer that how finer is the mesh quality we get the
accurate results, and the error % for the analysis is 4.199%.

Problem 4)

Consider a steel bracket (E = 29.9×106 psi, ν = 0.3) with a thickness of 1 in.

The dimensions of the bracket are shown below. The bracket is loaded
uniformly along the top surface, and it is fixed along the left edge. Use
ANSYS to determine the maximum displacement, the maximum von Mises
stress, the maximum and minimum principle stresses, the maximum and
minimum normal stress 𝜎𝑥 in the bracket. Also plot the deform shape, the
contour plot of von Mises stress, principle stresses and normal stress 𝜎𝑥.
