The primary responsibility for the safety and care of students rests with the whole school
organization. This is an important aspect in fulfilling the role to recognize that there is an element of
risk in all physical activity. All organization or school must have culturally responsive training and
other professional development to be able to implement such guidelines to put in place and improve
school climate, ensure equitable educational opportunities for all students.

A safe school promotes the protection of students from violence, threats, theft, bullying, and
other kinds of hazardous fears. School safety is linked to improved student and school outcomes. In
particular, emotional and physical safety in school is related to academic performance.

These guidelines include procedures for teachers to help minimize, to the greatest extent
possible, the risk of a preventable accident or injury as well as the violation of civil rights and to
develop safe school strategies and positive learning environments.

Safety guidelines to prevent student injury:

 The teacher must be vigilant to prevent one student from pressuring another into trying
activities
 The teacher must be present at, in control of, and fully attentive to the students
 The teacher must be encouraged to stay current with respect to safe exercise techniques
 The teacher must establish routines, rules of acceptable behaviour and appropriate duties of
students

Safety guidelines to prevent violation of individual civil rights:

 The teacher must ensure rights of students

 The teacher must encourage students to implement comprehensive and supportive
discipline practices
 The teacher must address childhood traumas
 The teacher must enhance protections against harassment and discrimination
 The teacher must eliminate threats to students’ health and safety

In order to ensure that students are learning in safe, healthy, and inclusive environments, it
is hoped that this suggested guidelines/procedures will assist educators in fulfilling their obligation
to provide the safest possible environment in which all students, regardless of physical, mental,
emotional abilities/ challenges or cultural background, can be physically active.
