Rules for Scientific Nomenclature
1. The scientific name (Genus name, Species name and Subspecies name)
should be written or printed in Italics.
2. The genus name or generic name must start with the capital letter.
3. The species name or the specific name must start with the small letter
4. The generic name should be followed by the specific name
5. In case different scientists have named the same genus or species
differently, the names which are published first are accepted.
6. A family name is formed by suffix-IDEA to the name of the genus and the
name of the sub family is formed by suffix-INAE.
Typification, Type and its Kinds
• Holotype: Single specimen on which description of the species is based.
Red colored label is fixed on the specimen.
• Allotype: Specimen of the opposite sex to holotype. Also carries a red
label.
• Paratype: All remaining specimens after the designation of holotype and
allotype are assigned the status of paratypes. They carry yellow labels.
• Syntypes: If no holotype is designated, all specimens that the author
studied for the description of the species are called syntypes.
• Lectotype: In the absence of a holotype, one specimen from syntypes
can be designated as Lectotype and rest of the specimens as
Paralectotypes.
• Neotype: If all type-specimens are destroyed, a neotype, that fits the
description very well, can be designated under exceptional
circumstances.
