Using Pattern Blocks to Teach Fractions

Standards Math Grade 3

- CC.2.3.3 Geometry
- Use the understanding of fractions to partition shapes into parts with equal areas
and express the area of each part as a fraction of the whole.
- CC.2.1.3 Numbers and Operations
- Explore and develop an understanding of fractions as numbers.

1.What do you want the children to know and be able to do?

Third-grade students will be able to use pattern blocks to display their understanding of fractions.

2. How will you know what they know and whether or not they have mastery of the
concept?
The teachers will display shapes that can be created with pattern blocks on a pegboard to the
class. The class will individually recreate the shape from the pegboard using pattern blocks on
their desk. Students will recreate their pattern block shape with colored pencils on chart paper
provided to them and label the shape they created and the shapes they used.

Devise a formative and a summative assessment for teaching children these concepts. (Hint: It
could be one and the same :-) - if so when is it formative and when is it summative?

3. How will you collect appropriate data?

_____ The student-created accurate drawings of their shapes on their paper
_____ The students label each shape they use and create properly
_____ Teacher will collect graph paper with student drawings and labels
