The four different parts of the body of the Fish clan are cheek bones, deep brown eyes, hair, feet, and
hands

Saul isd trying to convey that his people and nature are connected

Saul is at a treatment facility called The New Dawn Centre. The significance of the name is that it gives
people a new chance and it gives them hope.
5. At the end of the chapter Saul says he has lost a gift, and his life has been “a trek to rediscover it.”
Explain in your own words what that gift is. (p. 3)
The gift that Saul has lost his ability to see his past ancestors that died on the land at the beginning of the
chapter.

The people's first reaction when Shabogeesick brings the horse to the community is fear and confusion
because they have never seen a horse before

The arrival of this strange animal might symbolize how the Europeans and white people came to their
land.
3. What does Shabogeesick’s vision of the future (p.7) suggest?
His vision of the future shows lots of change coming at a very fast speed and encounter new things which
could foreshadow residential schools
4. Who does the horse belong to (p.7) and how did Shabogeesick get it?
The horse belongs to Shabogeesick and he walked out of a bush with a horse

Chapter 3 Questions
1. Why do Saul and his brother have to hide if strangers are spotted? (pp. 9-10)
They have to hide if the strangers are spotted because then they will be taken by the government to a
residential school
2. After Benjamin is stolen, Saul’s parents bring “The white man with them in brown bottles.” (p.11)
Explain this metaphor.
This metaphor is displaying that Saul's brother, Benjamin, looks Indigenous on the outside (brown bottle)
but is white on the inside due to the influence of the residential school
