In your table groups, complete a vocabulary web on two of the following vocabulary words: concussion apparatus tumultuously slacken wavering consequence repercussions resilient bore (verb)

5. Prepare to answer these discussion questions in small groups: Literary Response and Interpretation Questions: ! Why is the sun important in our lives? ! What does the title of the story mean? Is it an effective title? What is another title you might give this story, and why? ! Why is Margot unhappy on Venus? ! Why do the children dislike Margot? Why does she not like to play their games? Give evidence from the story to support your ideas. ! Explain the meaning of the words reasons of big and little consequence. Think of other examples of situations in which reasons that seem small are just as important as those that seem to be larger. ! Find examples of imagery used in the story. What were some images the author created which seemed especially vivid? Reasoning Questions: ! Did the children mean to leave Margot in the closet, or did they only forget about her in their excitement? Use evidence from the story to support your point of view. ! How do the five generalizations of change relate to the storys events? ! Margot changed in many ways when she came to Venus from Earth, mainly because the weather did not change. How can an environment in which things do not change cause negative changes to those within that environment? Why is change important? ! How might the story have been different if it had rained only once in seven years of sun? Would the story have been happier, or would other problems have made the circumstances just as unfortunate? 6. Research Assignment: due:____________________ In teams of five people, use the library and the internet to find out about the following topics, and fill out the Bibliography Sheet about your sources. Take the rest of the hour to do this, and we will share during the block. Team A: During the early years of space study and exploration, it was thought that Venus might be a planet upon which we could someday create a colony from Earth, because initial perceptions of its atmosphere suggested it might be a twin to Earth. Find out what discoveries eliminated this possibility, and what aspects of the climate of Venus that make it completely uninhabitable by life a we know it. Explore the climates of the other planets of the solar system to see which if any of the others might be considered possibilities for future communities. How long does summer really last on Venus? What determines the beginning and end of summer in our solar system? Team B: In certain areas of the world, daylight hours are extremely short during the winter. Many people who move to these areas suffer physical and mental health problems as a result of the limited sunlight. Find out about why the daylight hours are so short in these areas, what health problems might result, and how these health problems may be treated. What other countries have summer all year long? What causes the four seasons? 9. In your Writers Notebook, make sure to include this Response Journal Prompt: How does the weather affect your feelings and activities? 2
