Executive Summary:

• The present report analyses the thermal performance of the top section for project
“Budweiser”.

• Some changes are necessary; given the below are instituted the top section will provide a
functional environment that meets the equipment’s operational specifications

-The lowest elevation radome will be constructed of perforated sheet metal.

-The upper radomes will have 24 vents sized 8”x5” each for a total of 48 vents.

-Inivisiwave apertures will be installed in each radome section.

-The RRUs will be rearranged –in order of rising elevation: RRU 11s, 8843s, and then
the 4449s. The RRUs will also be staggered 60 degrees to prevent the lower RRUs from
overheating the ones above.
Approach
Environmental Conditions-Design conditions were derived from GR-487 requirements

• Ambient Air Temperature:38.9C (102 F) the 50-year return value for max dry bulb
temperature at Clinton Municipal, IA –19 miles from DeWitt, IA.

• Solar Radiation:
-Section 3.3.3.1: Test Conditions for Surface Temperature Measurements for
Cabinets/Enclosures Placed in a Class 4 Environment
-753 W/m2 on all applicable solar areas

• The equipment was modeled as solid aluminum with an internal heat source.

Pass/Fail Criterion:
Equipment Limit:
Lacking a maximum baseplate temperature for the equipment to use as a pass/fail criterion, an
estimated maximum baseplate temperature was found by isolating the CFD model of each heat
generating component in a 55C ambient environment and recording its average baseplate
temperature as an upper limit. This upper limit was then compared to baseplate temperature when
incorporated in the full assembly. This was used to determine a margin of safety.

Typical Isolated 55C Ambient Analysis

Model Details:
• Using 3D models of the design, a simplified CFD
(Computational Fluid Dynamics) model was built
using the Autodesk Fusion and Autodesk CFD
software.
Assumptions:

Estimated Material/Finish Coefficients:

• Absorptivity of pole and radome: 1 Assumed to be perfect black body, all incoming radiation is
absorbed.

• Emissivity of pole and radome: 0.9 Conservative estimate of emissivity for material exposed to solar
radiation.

Cable resistance is anticipated to be low and was not included in the model.

Conclusion:

Under the given design conditions, all equipment is operating as if it were in an ambient
temperature of 55°C or lower, meeting OEM specifications.

The concept is to rely on convection only. “The chimney effect“. The heat generated by the radios will rise, drawing air in the bottom and the hot
