THE WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL, LOS ANGELES.

The Walt Disney Concert hall is located at 11 South Grand Avenue

in downtown Los Angeles, California is the forth hall of the los angeles
music centre and was designed by Frank Gehry. It opened on October
23, 2003. It seats 2265 people and serves among other purposes as the
home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra.
The criticism of this building can be grouped according to the
criticism criteria as follows;

1. Function.
The design protects the idea of the concert hall as a refuge,
embodies the basic informality of Los Angeles, demystifies and
democratizes classical music a goal that happen to match those of
the leader of the Los Angeles.
2. Aesthetics.
The building was supposed to be finished with a stone finish
which was Gehry’s preference for its warmth but most of the
planners didn’t like his idea because they had seen his other
completed projects like the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao in
which stain steel was used on its facades so they adopted it due
to its shinny finish that catches the eye very fast.
3. Economic.
The building was a splashy one due to amount of money
spent which was estimated to over $274 million of which $110
million was used for the construction of the garage alone and also
the fact that the materials used were also costly like the curved
stainless steel boards for the exterior finish yet other affordable
alternatives could also be used to lower the cost.
4. Structure.
The design of the structural system was mainly done by hand
hence his design concepts were limited by the nature of the hand
drawings produced. After some time CATIA was available that
enabled him render the plans and modify the program to portray
the flowing lines of the irregular angles of the complicated curves.
5. Social.
The hall is a magical project that proved LA could come
together to create a civic icon. ” Ultimately the contributions
created an icon that influenced architecture in LA and also

philanthropy” said Babcock. Hence this project gave Frank Gehry a
major voice in the American Architecture.
6. Architect.
Frank Gehry is one of the great well-known architects. In
the majority of his completed projects, the most noted one which
had some similarities with the concert hall is the Guggenheim
museum in Bilbao since they used almost the same stainless steel
materials on their facades.
7. Cultural.
The cultural concept was preserved since the native
community carried out their occasions inside it ranging from music
dance and drama. Most of the musicians were delighted
performing in a well-designed hall with good sound system. The
people admire it for its architectural highlights, others for the pure
sound of the hall itself.

Results.
All in all, nobody can design a perfect project but as per this
particular it’s a good design which fulfilled some of the design
principles like function, aesthetics among others.
