Chapter 5 Discussion Questions
1. With the impending labor shortage in key job areas in the next few years an organization
should start recruiting people in those specific areas, so they can account for the
upcoming labor shortage. For training, the organization should train the current
employees, so they will be qualified to do these key jobs once the organization sends
them to those areas that will experience labor shortages. For compensations, the
organization should give better benefits to the current employees who are going to fill in
those positions. By doing that it would give the employees incentive to stay longer in that
position.
2. The reason why the do not have an HR plan as a whole because affirmative action
focuses more on the representation of the subgroups and that the employers carry out an
additional level of HR planning, so there is not need for a formal HR plan. This suggests
that they focus more on using the Workforce Utilization Review, rather than having a
formal HR plan.
3. Sales Rep. is the job that has the greatest turnover. To help reduce the job turnover rate is
by providing training for the employees for certain positions, so they could be offered a
promotion.
4. The job that has the most internal recruitment is sales apprentice. Assistant Plant
Manager is mostly external recruiting. The reason for sale apprentice to be mostly
internal recruitment is because they have chances to be promoted to sales rep. then to
sales manager. So, they have a set path in the company. While, Assistant Plant manager
is more a specific job and needs skilled people with experience, so it is better for them
externally.
5. They rather have it combined because it gives them the ability to compare past data and
the knowledge they know from their experience to be able to their organizations future

performance. Judgement Forecasts would be inaccurate because if your manager is only
relying on his experience in sales to help identify business growth or know what his
employees needs then it could either be correct or way off. Since it could be a biased
opinion because he is going off of what he knows. Statistical you can look at historical
data and find the trends in sales, but their isn’t any consistency in the market, so the data
can never be identical because the market is so volatile.
6. Employment at will would reduce attract the pool of job candidates because the
employers or employees can terminate their position/job at any time no matter what the
cause was. Lead the market pay strategies would increase the pool for job candidates
because if the job is paying higher than the standard market wage then people would
apply for that position. I would not say these policies would increase the quality because
you could have a lot of people who apply that do not match their requirements or people
who are overqualified for the job. In addition, it may increase the number of applicants,
but sometimes the more people who apply the more you get the people who are not suited
for the job even if they look good on their resume.
7. The good thing about internal versus external recruiting is that you can fill upper-level
positions in your company by looking at the current employees you have internally. If
you want to find candidates that are needed for a specific position that requires specific
skills then you would have to recruit externally.
8. I was recruited to work as an Event Staffer for EPI and for Clemson Activities and Events
(Clemson Reservation and Events). The way EPI recruited me was because they needed
more people to work Clemson events and they liked that I could work immediately. For
CAE (or CRE now) they liked how I had experience in dealing with events and have
customer service skills. There really wasn’t pros or cons in their method because they just
gained a really hard worker and helped filled the vacant spots.
9. The company could post it on an electronic recruiting site or go to a college career fair
because there are a lot of foreign exchange students, so they would help fit the
requirement of the international assignments.
10. Electronic recruiting helps advertise they are hiring and let them have an easier time
finding applicants that fit their job criteria. It also makes it easier to fill out applications
and all the information is provided, so a company could potentially receive hundreds of

applications and can view a person’s profile and resume to help see if they are match for
their job. Also it helps give candidates updates from the company if they have received
their information and resume as well keep them informed if they will be picked and
proceed with the interview process.
11. By giving them more training and being able to sell that the company they work for has
great benefits.
