1) Patagonia mission differs from most other companies is because they want to protect and
preserve the environment while creating their products. Unlike other companies that do not care
about destroying the environment. In addition, they believe if corporations want to have power,
they have to do it within the system, which is different from other companies
2) Patagonia is one of the best places to work at is because they hire people who have the same
core values/beliefs. This type of HR practice is called a Protean career because the employees are
committed to the company because they know that the company is not fake about what they are
trying to achieve. In addition, the Protean career practice focuses on psychological success like
having good physical work, finding true meaning in the work they do in Patagonia, and having
flexibility in doing job tasks. The benefits Patagonia have is “let my people surf” philosophy,
which is basically allowing employees have a flexible scheduling and be a user of the products
you are developing. Another benefit is “enviro internship” where after an employee has been in
the company for a year, they will pay that employee’s salary up to 60 days to give their time to a
grassroot activism group that they really believe in and the only requirement is that when they
comeback they have to give a presentation and write a report telling them what is going on. They
also have a child care development center because they have employees who have young
children that cannot be left alone, so this helps employees be fully committed to the company
and not have to worry about leaving their children alone or struggle to pay for day care.
Therefore, Patagonia cares a lot about their employees’ happiness.
3) Because the core values and employee benefits attract people who have those same beliefs, so
they do not need to spend a lot of money on recruiting. Since they naturally attract people who
have the same beliefs as them.
4) The characteristics that would describe a candidate that is likely to be hired by Patagonia is
one with strong environmental beliefs/activism, which also aligns with the company’s core
values/beliefs. It supports Patagonia’s strategy because they believe in making a change in the
environment and letting their employees get involved in grassroot activism.
5) It helps improve the quality of their products because they basically encourage their
employees to use and test out their products.
