its first basis (column) is a vector in the same direction as [1, −1]T .
2. What are the Fourier series coefficients for the signal x(t) = 10 + 4 sin(400πt + π/2) + 3 cos(20πt +
π) + cos(60πt − 1)?
3. A right-sided signal has Laplace transform X(s) = 5/(s2 + 3s + 2), with ROC σ > −1. Calculate:
a) X(s)|s=2+2j , b) if the corresponding Fourier transform X(Ω) exists, |X(Ω)| for Ω = π rad/s.
4. What is the Z transform X(z) of the signal x[n] = 2δ[n + 1] + 5δ[n − 4], including the ROC?
What are the values of X(z) for z = 0, −1 and z = 2ejπ/2 ? If the DTFT of x[n] exists, what are its
values for ω = 0 and π rad?
5. The bilateral Fourier series of a real signal x(t) with period T0 = 4 s has four non-zero coefficients.
Assume that c1 = 2e−j2 and c3 = 4ej3 . What is the expression for x(t)?
6. Prove the expression for the Z transform of x[n] = 0.7n u[n] − 0.8n u[−n − 1], indicating the ROC.
Does this signal have a DTFT?
7. Carefully draw the graph of the imaginary part of the DTFT of y[n] = 2 + 3ejπn for the range
−3π ≤ ω ≤ 3π.
8. What are the forward AH and inverse A matrices for a 4-points orthonormal DFT?
9. A signal x[n] has Z transform X(z) = (8z 2 + 3z + 1)/((z − 0.7)(z − 0.8)), with ROC |z| > 0.8.
Find x[n].
10. Consider that a periodic x(t) was sampled with Fs = 10 Hz, obeying the sampling theorem. A
12-points FFT was calculated using M atlab/Octave and the output X was normalized by N = 12.
The only non-zero coefficients were k = 0, 1 and 11, corresponding to the elements of X[1] = 2,
X[2] = j3 and X[12] = −j3, respectively. a) What is the frequency in Hz of the component with
largest power of x(t)? b) what is the average (DC) value of x(t)? c) what is the spacing in Hz between
neighboring elements of X? d) what is the maximum frequency found in x(t)?
11. There are four Fourier pairs for analyzing continuous and discrete-time signals: a) Fourier
transform, Fourier series, DTFT and DTFS (equivalent to the DFT). Provide the forward and inverse
equations for each pair and indicate the unit in frequency domain assuming that the unit in time is
Volts.
12. Using the orthogonality condition of the basis functions carefully prove the pair of Fourier series
equations. Indicate the assumptions in each step.
