MATHEMATICS 5

Jay D. Bolano
Math Teacher
Today, we will learn to perform a series of more than two
operations on whole numbers applying Parenthesis, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, Subtraction (PMDAS).

LET’S START!!!

Do you know how to cook

rice? Can you write down below
the steps you need to do in
cooking rice?
EXPLORE AND DISCOVER!!!

In cooking, it is very important to follow

steps and exact directions accurately to
avoid mistake or confusion.
This is also the same in problem solving
that you must follow a certain order of
operation by using PMDAS or GMDAS to solve
for the correct answer.
"Operations" mean things like add, subtract, multiply, divide,
squaring, etc. If it isn't a number it is probably an operation.
But, when you see something like ...
28 – 6 x ( 2 + 4) ÷ 3 = ?

Do you know how to find the value of the above expression?

What part should you calculate first?

Start at the left and go to the right? Or go from right to left?

WARNING!!!
Calculate them in the wrong order,
and you can get a wrong answer!
We follow the GMDAS or PMDAS rule when we do
calculations involving the operations.
These rules are:
1. Grouping symbols or Parentheses – if there are
expressions in grouping symbols such as
parentheses or brackets, do them first.
2. Multiplication or Division – Multiply or divide from
left to right.
3. Addition or Subtraction – Then add or subtract
from left to right.

When the expression involves

addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division with brackets, we follow the
order:

Step 1: Do what is in the parentheses

first.
Step 2: Do multiplication and division
from left to right.
Step 3: Do addition and subtraction
from left to right.
Let’s solve!

(a) 28 – 6 x (2+4) ÷ 3 = 28 – 6 x (2+4) ÷ 3

= 28 – 6 x 6 ÷ 3
= 28 – 36 ÷ 3
= 28 – 12
= 16
Let’s solve!

(b) 18 + (28-7) ÷ 3 – 11 = 18 + 21 ÷ 3 -11

= 18 + 7 -11
= 25 – 11
= 14
Let’s solve!

(c) 28 – (28-17) x 2 + (6+5) = 28 – 11 x 2 + 11

= 28 – 22 + 11
= 6 + 11
= 17
Let’s solve!

(d) 16 + (20+8x2) ÷ 4 – (15-11)

= 16 + (20+16) ÷ 4 -4
= 16 + 36 ÷ 4 – 4
= 16 + 9 – 4
= 25 - 4
= 21
HOW DO I REMEMBER IT ALL?
P Parentheses first

Subtraction (left-to- right)

You can remember by saying!!!

Popcorn every Monday Donuts Always Sunday

LET’S TRY!!!
Find the value of each of the following. Then check the answers by
using a calculator.

1) 36 ÷ (6+3) x 12 2) (6+9) x (22-8)

3) (20-4) ÷ 2 4) (34-4) ÷ 2 + 4

5) 8 + (9x5) 6) (25+5) x 3 - 13
KEEP MOVING!!!
Find the value of each of the following.

1) 59 – 18 ÷ (8+1) x 16 2) (17+5) x 4 ÷ 8

3) 71 + (24-8) x 10 4) (6+5) x (15-7)

5) 9 + 32 x 6 ÷ (40-28) 6) 24 ÷ (5+3) x 5
APPLY YOUR SKILLS!!!
Read and answer each item.

1. Sylvia bought 4 bananas for 20 pesos each and 3 apples for 25
pesos each. How much did Sylvia paid in all?

2. John bought 4 pants for P 365.00 each and paid the cashier with
P 1500.00. Find how much money John gets back from the cashier?

3. The price of a shirt is 500 pesos. The store manager gives a
discount of 50 pesos. Michael bought 4 shirts. How much did Michael
paid in all?
