Corn syrup solids. Corn syrup solids are derived from starch
hydrolysis and have dextrose equivalents of 20 or more. Corn
syrup solids are used primarily in beverages for humans but
substantial quantities often become available for animal feeds.
A US research team used corn syrup to replace 40%
crystalline lactose in a liquid milk replacer, offered ad libitum
to one-day-old pigs until weaning at 20 days of age. Two
grades of corn syrup were evaluated, 20 and 42 DE. Total
replacement of lactose with either grade corn syrup did not
affect growth performance, digestive development, or gastro-
intestinal architecture in neonatal pigs. Piglets grew at 380 grams
per day, reaching almost 10 kg body weight at only 20 days of
age; an astonishing growth rate illustrating the power of well-
formulated (albeit expensive) liquid milk replacer programs.

This order of preference does not take into account the use
of modern artificial sweeteners, whereas the use of stevia as a
natural alternative sweetener remains rather unexplored.
In addition, excessive concentrations of simple sugars are
always possible to predispose pigs to osmotic diarrhea. For
instance, by changing the amount of sugars (sucrose and corn
syrup solids), dietary osmolality was manipulated between 250
and 700 mOsm/kg. Absorption of water and carbohydrates
from the small intestine in piglets increased, and thus chances
for diarrhea were minimized, as osmolality increased, at
similar dietary electrolyte balance. Maltodextrin increases

Personal experiences
My M.Sc. thesis at Kansas State University was based partially
on lactose and its alternatives. Since then, I have formulated
countless piglet feeds based on lactose alternatives. Of particular
interest is a case in Midwest USA where an inexpensive and
abundant supply of cane molasses was used to create a complete
piglet nutrition program using molasses exclusively. This was a
commercial line of feeds using up to 20% molasses. Of course,
pellet quality suffered, and feed bags leaked, but these were
