Distinction should be made between involontary appearance (physical characteristics, regulations) and volontary
appearance (manners, attire, attitude). Volontary appearance is frequently what we (or our authority figures) want to
portray to the world or be perceived as - not only our personal preferences but our conformity or individualism and
associations. Inferrences from volontary appearance may be a legitimate response to appearance created.
Involontary appearance is a different matter.
