thesis/dissertation. This sub-section facilitates the pre-hand information for the reader about
the abbreviations; so that smooth reading can be facilitated.
Abstract:

This will include a brief summary of the whole study including background of the
study, methodology, results and recommendations. The word limit must not exceed more
than 250-300 words.

Key words: 3-5 words

CHAPTER I: BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction: (generally upto 5 pages)

This must include the few paragraphs about the background of the study, statement of
the problem and purpose of the study. The primary goal of the introductory
paragraphs is to catch the attention of the reader to get them “turned on” about the
subject. It sets stage for the paper and puts topic in perspective.

Need of the Study:

This section creates a perspective for looking at the problem. It points out how your
study relates to the larger issue and uses a persuasive rationale to justify the reason for
your study. It makes the purpose worth pursuing. The significance of the study
answers the questions:

- Why is your study important?

- To whom is it is important?
- What benefits will occur if your study is done?

Research Problem: This section includes the statement of the research problem.
For example;
A descriptive study to assess the prevalence of pin site infection among patients with
external skeletal fixation admitted in trauma ward of Govt. Medical Hospital,
Jalandhar, Punjab.

Aim of the Study: It includes overall purpose of the study.

Objectives:
This section includes the statements of the action and outcome which researcher
wants to achieve during research activity. For example:

- To assess the prevalence of pin site infection among patients with external
skeletal fixation.
- To determine the relationship of pin site infection among patients with
external skeletal fixation with their selected socio-demographic variables.
Operational Definitions:

This section involves the operationally defined terms used in the research study in the
manner, where researcher is going to study the variables, which must be measureable.

Hypotheses / Assumptions:

Each research is based on some hypotheses or assumption, which researches have to

test through research findings. Qualitative Research, Descriptive and Exploratory
Research usually have Assumptions and Correlation, Experimental, Quasi-
experimental research usually have Hypotheses.

Delimitations:

All research studies also have limitations and a finite scope. Limitations are often
imposed by time and budget constraints. Precisely list the limitations of the study.
Descriptive the extent to which you believe the limitation degrade the quality of the
research.

Conceptual Framework:

This section involves the descriptive and diagrammatic presentation of the conceptual
framework developed for the research study.

CHAPTER II: REVIEW OF LITERATURE

It is important because it shows what previous researchers have discovered. It is usually quite
long and primarily depends upon how much research has previously been done in the area
you are planning to investigate. If you are planning to explore a relatively new area, the
literature review should cite similar areas of study or studies from the current research.

CHAPTER III: METHODOLOGY

This chapter include following elements:

 Research approach
 Research design
 Research setting
 Target population
 Sample and Sampling technique
 Inclusion and exclusion criteria
 Selection and Development of tool
 Description of tool
 Validity of tool
 Reliability of tool
 Pilot study
 Data collection procedure
 Ethical consideration
 Plan of data analysis

CHAPTER IV: ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This section presents the description of the study sample characteristics, analysis and
interpretation of the data through descriptive and inferential statistics. The data needs to be
presented through tables / graphs / figures.

CHAPTER V: DISCUSSION

This section includes explanation of findings; where researcher presents his finding through
critical analysis along with comparison with other similar research findings and theories.

CHAPTER VI: SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND

RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary includes few paragraphs summarizing what you did and found in the present
study.

Conclusion includes few paragraphs based on result of the present study.

Recommendations should be based on the findings of the study and should indicate the
further scope of research in same area and utilization and implication of research findings in
Nursing Services, Nursing Administration and Nursing Education.
