Understanding pain physiology and pathology helps us to understand how to treat pain.
Normal pain physiology involves a number of steps between the site of injury and the
brain – this is called the “pain pathway” (Fig 1). The pain signal can be changed at
many points along the pain pathway, e.g. by drugs or psychological factors. These
changes affect the amount and type of pain we feel.
Pain pathology involves damage to or abnormality of the pain pathway. This can cause
neuropathic pain.
