ill/sickness. Screening tests or health appraisal is as important as living a
healthy lifestyle. As an adolescent, your personal health is very important
especially at this stage where you are growing fast and developing maturely.
So, be responsible of your personal health and take action while you are
young.

Health Appraisal Procedure During Adolescence

Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 35

Background Information for Learners
Personal health is our personal responsibility most especially now that we are now a
young adolescence. Checking and monitoring our personal health will help us determine if
we have problems which needs treatment that could prevent it from worsening.

To help us in monitoring our physical health, we have learned in our previous

meetings that health appraisal procedure consist of different tests to assess or determine our
health status. These are the following:
 Medical Exam – Keeps you informed about your general health status
 Dental Exams – keeps you informed of any dental problem
 Height Taking – gives you an idea of your growth rate
 Weight Taking – gives you awareness if you are within your ideal weight
 Vision Test – keeps you informed of your visual activity
 Scoliosis Test – gives you idea of any abnormal curvature of your spine
 Breast Self-Examination – for girls, this tests gives you an idea if you have unusual
lumps in your breast

Learning Competency with Code

Demonstrates health appraisal procedures during adolescence in order to achieve holistic
health (Week 9/Q1 H7GD-Iij-23)

ACTIVITY 1. HEIGHT
Direction: Using a height chart, follow the directions below.
1. Stand straight and lean your back on the chart
2. Let someone get your height in inches or centimeters using a ruler or a stick by
placing it on top of your head.
3. Record your result.

ACTIVITY 2. WEIGHT
Direction: Using a weighing scale, follow the directions below:
1. Stand on the weighing scale and get your result. You may use digital or manual
weighing scale for this activity.
2. Record your result

ACTIVITY 3. VISION TEST

Direction: Follow the steps below to measure your vision acuity.

Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 36

1. Secure the Snellen chart to a flat

surface in a well-lit room. The chart

should be at a comfortable height,
which may change depending on the
individual's height.

2. Measure twenty feet from the chart

and mark a spot facing the chart
directly. (The test results will only be
accurate if it is taken from this
distance.)

3. Stand at the twenty foot line and cover

your left eye, so you can only see out
of your right eye.

4. Starting from the top, read each row

from left to right for as far down as
you can still make out the letters. Note
the last line on which you could
correctly identify every letter. Have
an assistant verify that you are reading
the letters correctly.

5. Repeat the test with your left eye,

covering your right eye this time. Note
the last row you could read with

Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 37

complete accuracy. The row for each
eye will not necessarily be the same.

If the patient can read line 8, their vision is 20/20, which means that the patient can
see the same line of letters at 20 feet that a person with normal vision can see at 20 feet.

ACTIVITY 4. SCOLIOSIS SCREENING PROCEDURE

Directions: Follow the steps below to test your spine.

Forward Bend Test:

1. Stand facing away from the screener.
2. Bend forward at the waist 90 degrees, feet 10 cm apart, knees straight, and feet
parallel to each other.
3. Palms of the hands are facing each other and arms hang down, and are relaxed. The
head is down.

It is normal if the screener observes the following:

 Both sides of upper and lower back are symmetrical.
 Hips level and symmetrical.

There is possible scoliosis if the screener observes the following:

 One side of rib cage and/or the lower back showing uneven symmetry.
 Curve in the alignment of the spine.

ACTIVITY 5. BREAST SELF-EXAMINATION (GIRLS ONLY)

Directions: Follow the steps below to examine your breast.

Every woman should do breast self- examination every month. The steps in doing this are the
following:

1. You can do this while taking a shower. With fingers flat, examine gently every part of
each breast. Use the right hand for the left breast, and the left hand for the right breast.
Check carefully for any lump, hard knot, or thickening.

2. You can do this in front of a mirror. Examine each breast with arms at the sides, and
then raise your arms high overhead. Look closely for the following:
 changes in shape of each breast

Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 38

 swelling, redness
 dimpling of the skin
 changes in the nipple

Next, with palms on hips, press down firmly to flex the chest muscles. Check the
breast again carefully.

3. Do the following lying down:

 Place a pillow or folded towel under the right shoulder.
 Place your right hand behind your head.
 With the fingers of your left hand flat, press gently in small circular motion
around an imaginary clock face. Start at the outermost top or 12 o’clock
position of your right breast, and then move your left hand to 1 o’clock and so
on around the circle back to 12 o’clock. Move the hand inch by inch toward
the nipple. Keep circling to examine every part of the breast, including the
nipple. Do the same on the left breast.
 Press the nipple of each breast gently between the thumb and index finger.

Note any discharge such as milk or blood. Report this immediately to a doctor.

Fill out the table given below for the result and observation of each test.

Reflection

As the old African proverb says, "It takes a village to raise a child." One could
imagine then that it would take communities to raise a school. When schools and community
organizations work together to support learning, everyone benefits. Partnerships between and
among community organizations and schools strengthen, support, and even transform
individual partners, resulting in improved program quality, more efficient use of resources,
and better alignment of goals and curricula (Harvard Family Research Project, 2010).

Adolescence is the transitional phase of growth and development between childhood
and adulthood. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines an adolescent as any person
ages 10 and 19.
It is the period of sexual development among adolescents and the starts of the cycle of
physical, mental, emotional and social changes that resulted into health concerns or problems.
These health concerns or problems brought about by changes during adolescence
should be dealt properly to prevent negative consequences. Since many of these can be
prevented, you should learn the coping skills to manage these challenges positively.
Coping skills will help you deal with the different situations or experiences that you
might be encountering in your daily living activities. If you have developed a proper coping
skills, you can prevent serious problems resulting from these experiences.
There are several coping techniques that you can utilize in ordinary life situations. To

a different solutions to the problem.
3. Avoidance Strategies which is acceptable for a short-term like avoidn being with
people, try to forget the whole thing or hoping for a miracle to happen.
4. Positive-Reframing Strategies: Self-talk is a way to help you change your
thoughts. This is composed of statements that you use as coping skills when you are under
