BIDIMENSIONAL ARRAY OF PATCH ANTENNAS

This work aims at revealing the significant changes in the patch antenna radiation pattern
when using arrays of such antennas on a plane surface.
Run the Matlab script PatchArray and fill in the tables below. The number of antennas on
each axis is introduced by means of the keyboard. The main lobe beamwidth is measured as
the difference between directions for which the relative modulus of the electric field
diminishes to 0.8.
The script runs for any array size, not only for those mentioned in the table.

A. Fill in the following table by successively running the Matlab script:

r = 3
Nx X Ny
Parameter Plane
2x2 3x3 4x4 5x5 6x6 7x7 8x8
Plane E
 (degrees)
Plane H
Plane E
Ns
Plane H
Plane E
rmax
Plane H

r = 6
Nx X Ny
Parameter Plane
2x2 3x3 4x4 5x5 6x6 7x7 8x8
Plane E
 (degrees)
Plane H
Plane E
Ns
Plane H

rmax
Plane H

 – Main lobe beamwidth

Ns – Number of secondary lobes
rmax – level of the greatest secondary lobe
Plane E – plane of vector E
Plane H – plane of vector H
Nx – Number of antennas on the Ox axis (plane of vector H)
Ny – Number of antennas on the Oy axis (plane of vector E)

B. Answer to the following questions:

1.Which variable directly influences the number of secondary lobes ?
2.What kind of relation does it exist between the main lobe beamwidth and the number of
antennas on the corresponding axis ?
3. What kind of relation does it exist between the number of secondary lobes and the number
of antennas on the corresponding axis ?
4. Is it influenced the level of the greatest secondary lobe by the number of antennas on the
corresponding axis ? How ?
