Computer Network Design for a Mall 2

Summary

This is a network design description for a mall, this text includes specification to the network

which is dependent on the mall design and the overall management network goal. The mall is

called PriceLo Mall branch in North Melbourne, the Mall management want both wireless

and wired network inside the mall. The mall has four floors and three food courts of five

hundred customers each. The mall can accommodate approximate four thousand customers,

five hundred staff in five departments namely IT department with fifty staff, Human

Resources with 50 staff, Sales with 100 staff, Engineering with 80 staff and security

m
department 200 personnel. Each department should have their own subnet. The customers are

co
tech savvy and should be able the access wirelessly and wired as long as they are customers

at the mall. The speed of the network depends on the customer purchase record. The

management also want to monitor everything the network user does on the network to make

sure it is not illegal or un appropriate.

Based on the above business network requirements the network for the mall is as follows.

The network capacity is based on five thousand users. The first step is laying the mall

intranet. For high speeds most of the connections need to be wired since wired connection are

faster then.

Network Devices Requirements

The first step in setting up the network is examining the geo-location for the network in this

case the build for the network has four floors. Based on this each floor will have its own

router and switch. Since the management want to set user bandwidth based on user’s traffic

and also monitor the user’s network traffic to make sure they are not downloading or

accessing anything illegal the network will have a central network and proxy server at the

gateway. Since every department will have their own network to make sure only the

department staff can access department’s records and track the access to the department data.

There will be five departmental servers for each department. For security and easy data

management and back-up there will be a database server connected to the main network

server at the gateway. This is to ease traffic on the network when the mall staff are access the

mall data example accessing the customer records and the products records. On each food

court table there is should be a LAN port for the customers to plug in their devices when they

want wired connectivity.

housed. The router has been configured with a password which only the network manager

knows so security reasons. The gateway router is also configured with the mall intranet IP

address so the outside network views the intranet as a one connection device for fast and easy

network access and security purposes. The gateway router also acts as a firewall protecting

the intranet from the outside network.

The gateway router is then connected to network server to monitor the network traffic. The

network traffic is configured to authorize any access to the intranet. This network server

makes it easier to set the customer’s network bandwidth and view what they are using the

network connection for and the location they are accessing the network from. The database

server is connected to the network server; this connection is for the mall data security

protecting it from the outside network. This database server and network server connection

makes it easier to monitor access to the mall data. The network server is also used as a proxy

server, this configuration is to give every device connected to the network its intranet IP

address for easy devices monitoring and control is necessary.

On each floor there is a switch to distribute the network evenly in the mall building on each

floor. The switches have a capacity of 54 ports of which the wireless routers are connected.

The connected bandwidth of the mall building is aimed at having a 100 MBps bandwidth

constant for high network connectivity.
