 Fireside Gingham
Afghan and Pillow
Notes:
Deceptively simple and fun to make, this blanket and pillow
uses the star stitch and shades of Dove Heather,
Cobblestone Heather and Black to produce a gingham
pattern. Each side is finished with a four-row black border.

Work over unused color(s), holding them with normal tension.

To change color within a row, work star stitch indicated to

within one step of completion (one loop on hook), hook new
yarn, and draw through loop on hook, forming eyelet. Bring
new color from behind color dropped.

To add new skein within a row, work several stitches over

new skein (leaving a tail to weave in later). Follow the chart
for color changes pick up new skein color and drop or cut
remaining old skein.

Beginning Star St (beginning of each row)

YO, insert hook in third ch from hook (eyelet), YO and pull up
a lp, YO, insert hook in eyelet of next star st, YO and pull up a
lp, YO and draw through all 5 lps on hook, ch 1 to close star st
and form eyelet.

Star St
YO, insert hook in same eyelet as last leg of last star st made,
YO and pull up a lp, YO, insert hook in eyelet of next Star st,
YO and pull up a lp, YO and draw through all 5 lps on hook,
ch 1 to close Star st and form eyelet.
Ending Star St (end of each row)
YO, insert hook in same eyelet as last leg of last star st made,
YO and pull up a lp, YO, insert hook in ch 2 of turning ch, YO
and pull up a lp, YO and draw through all 5 lps on hook, ch 1
to close Star st and form eyelet.

With C1 ch 235. [The foundation ch is created in C1 to blend
in with the final border crocheted around entire afghan]
Row 1 (RS): Working with C1, while working over C2, YO,
insert in third ch from hook, YO and pull up a lp, YO, skip next
ch, insert hook in next ch, YO and pull up a lp, YO and draw
through all 5 lps on hook, ch 1 (the ch 1 is termed the eyelet of
the star stitch pattern), * YO, insert hook in same ch as last
leg of star st just made, YO and pull up a lp, YO, skip next ch,
insert hook in next ch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw
through all 5 lps on hook, ch 1; repeat from * across row (116
star sts) while following chart for color changes, ch 2, turn.
Row 2 (WS): Continue to follow the chart for Color Changes;
YO, insert hook in third ch from hook (eyelet), YO and pull up
a lp, YO, insert hook in eyelet of next star st, YO and pull up a
lp, YO and draw through all 5 lps on hook, ch 1, * YO, insert
hook in same eyelet as last leg of last star st made, YO and
pull up a lp, YO, insert hook in eyelet of next star st, YO and
pull up a lp, YO and draw through all 5 lps on hook, ch 1;
repeat from * across row; complete last star stitch in ch 2 of
turning ch, ch 2, turn. Insert hook in next ch, YO and pull up a

Rows 3-148: Work Row 2 for remaining rows while following
the chart for color changes.
Rep rows 1-8 of Fireside Gingham Chart 18 times, then repeat
rows 1-4 once more.
Border
Rnd 1: With C1, ch 2, turn. Work one row of star st evenly
around, work 3 DC in next 3 corners (e.g. complete last star
st in ch 2 space, 3 DC in same ch 2 space, begin the next
star stitch in the same ch 2 space). Along each side, use the
ch 2 space and the eyelet to complete each star st. Star st in
last ch 2 space. Ch 2 turn.
Rnd 2: Work one row of star st evenly around, working 3 DC
in next 3 corners (e.g. complete last star in the first DC, 3 DC
in second DC, begin the next star st in the same space as the
last DC made); star st in last ch 2 space. Ch 2, turn.
Rnd 3-4: Repeat Rnd 2.
Join with slip stitch, finish off.
Finishing
Weave in ends, wash and block.

rows 1-4 once more.
Border
Rnd 1: With C1, work one row of star stitch evenly around,
work 3 DC in next 3 corners (e.g. complete last star st in ch 2
space, 3 DC in same ch 2 space, begin the next star stitch in
the same ch 2 space). Along each side, use the ch 2 space
and the eyelet to complete each star st. Star st in last ch 2
space. Ch 2 turn.
Rnd 2: Work one row of star st evenly around, working 3 DC
in next 3 corners (e.g. complete last star in the first DC, 3 DC
in second DC, begin the next star st in the same space as the
last DC made); star st in last ch 2 space. Ch 2, turn.
Rnd 3-4: Repeat Rnd 2. Join with slip stitch, finish off.

Finishing
Place two pillow sides together and join. Attach C1 to one
corner and SC around three sides with three SC in each of
the three corners. Insert 20” pillow form and complete closing
pillow with SC.

Weave in all loose ends.

 ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Donna was born in Seattle, WA,
grew up in California, and now
lives in North Florida with her
husband, Michael, and their dog,
Shelby. At the age of eleven, her
Grandmother taught her to
crochet pineapple sachets, but
she soon found great pleasure in
creating afghans. Her afghan
designs are inspired by quilt
patterns and a technique that
produces a seamless and
reversible blanket.
