“Save the Last Word for Me” Discussion Protocol: ~20-25 minutes

School Days of an Indian Girl

STEP 1: 5 minutes Review your assigned section of the Zitkala-Sa School Days of an Indian
Girl reading. Your assigned section corresponds to the number of your breakout
room (found at the top of your screen).
Ex: Breakout Room 4 is in charge of Chapter IV “Iron Routine”

While you are reviewing, identify ONE sentence that you think is most
emotionally jarring, interesting, or worth discussion.

STEP 2: 3 minutes The person whose birthday is closest to today (in either direction), shares
their sentence by typing it on a sticky note on the JamBoard but does NOT
explain why they picked it.

In alphabetical order by screen name, each of the remaining group members

reacts to the quote and explains their thinking.

When it finally gets to the person who shared the quote, they explain why they
shared the quote and perhaps respond to other comments by group members.

STEPS 3-6: 9 minutes Repeat that process with the next person (let’s go alphabetical from here).

STEP 7: 2 minutes When everyone has shared, decide who will report out about these quotes
to the class (or all of you can each take turns) and then hang out in your breakout
room until you are called back to the main room.
(If you’re waiting a bit for other groups to finish, you can read the PTI (due Thursday/Friday) with
your Meet still on so that you notice when you are returned to the main room.)

STEP 8: 2 minutes Complete the Google Form Self-Evaluation for your participation today
