Depositional Environment
Depositional Environment is one of the parameters that define the
reservoir geology.
Depositional processes control porosity, permeability, net to gross ratio,
extent and lateral variability of reservoir properties.
Continental / Terrestrial
Fluvial - Sediment is deposited by a river.
Eolian - Sediment deposited by wind (deserts).
Lacustrine - Sediment deposited in Lakes.
Glacial - Sediment deposited by ice and meltwater.
Marine
Sediment accumulates on the ocean floor in shallow (continental shelf and
reef) to intermediate then deep (abyssal plain) environments.
72
Depositional Environment
Transitional
Between land (terrestrial) and marine environments.
Deltaic - Deposits at the mouth of a major stream/ river.
Beaches, lagoons and barrier islands - Sediment deposited by wind or
water.
73
Interpretation of Depositional
Environment by Means of Well Logs
The most valuable tools for a detailed environmental analysis are cores and wireline logs.
In particular the gamma ray (GR) response is useful since it captures the changes in energy
during deposition.
Source Rock
Rich in terrigenous organic matter concentrated in Middle Miocene Stage IVA/B sedimentary
intervals.
Reservoir Rock
Late Miocene Stage IVC interbedded, stacked deltaic fluvio-marine prograding and retrograding
sandstone with thin shale.

TYPES OF MIGRATION
Primary Migration
Involves the expulsion of petroleum from the source rock to
reservoir rock.
Secondary Migration
Involves the movement of petroleum through permeable layers (
carrier beds ) to the trap.
