Galloway is a farming community with a population of 1500 residents. With bananas as a main export crop, the residents enjoy a high standard of living, with many services and good health facilities During the last few years, however, health officials recorded several cases of a major illness mainly among males and to a lesser extent among females in Galloway; they also recorded birth defects among some babies. Out of concern, the Ministry of Health hired a team of researchers to determine the factors that contributed to the illness and birth defects. The researchers conducted the study among 500 residents who were affected by the illness. ‘The residents were asked what they considered contributed to these illnesses and birth defects. The findings revealed the following: 50 per cent of the cases were caused by exposure to a type of pesticide used on farms; 20 per cent of the cases were caused by contact with contaminated rivers: 15 per cent were related to diet; 10 per cent were caused by environmental factors and 5 per cent of the cases could not be determined, ‘The researchers presented the findings to the government and made some recommendations.
