Problem Set-up example:

Directions:
Find the formula mass of Ca(NO3)2
Find the formula mass of the following
Ca: 1 x 40.08 = 40.08 g/mol
compounds. Round atomic masses to
N: 2 x 14.01 = 28.02 g/mol
the hundredth of a decimal place. Write
O: 6 x 16.00 = 96.00 g/mol
your calculations and final answer in the
FORMULA MASS COLUMN. Formula Mass = 164.10 g/mol

Compound Formula Mass Compound Formula Mass

AgNO2 ZnCl2

NiSO3 K3PO4

Ca3(PO4)2 Al2(SO4)3

HgSO4 MgCrO4
Solve each of the following mixed problems. Round your answers
to the hundredths place and make sure your answers have the proper
units. You must show your work to receive full credit.

Important points to remember when performing mole

conversions:
 Know when to use Avogadro’s number (6.02 x 10 23) and when to use the
Periodic Table for the molar mass.
 If any type of particle (atoms, molecules, formula units, ions) is
mentioned in the problem, then you must use Avogadro’s number.
If there is no mention of any type of particle, DO NOT use
Avogadro’s number.
 If the problem has terms such as “mass,” “grams,” or “g,” then you
must use the Periodic Table to find the molar mass. If none of
these terms is mentioned in the problem, DO NOT use the Periodic
Table.
 If both of the above is true for a problem, then you must use BOTH
Avogadro’s number and the Periodic Table.

 Identify what you are given (G) and what you need to find (F).

 Diagram the pathway for the conversion that needs to be done.

Example: How many formula units are in 256.3 g of Mg3(PO4)2?
moles
mass particles

Mg: 3 x 24.31 = 72.93 g/mol

P: 2 x 30.97 = 61.94 g/mol
O: 8 x 16.00 = 128.00 g/mol
Formula Mass = 262.87 g/mol

256.3 g Mg3(PO4)2 1 mole Mg3(PO4)2 6.02 x 1023 f.u. Mg3(PO4)2

1 mole
= 5.87 x 1023 f.u. Mg3(PO 4)2
262.87 g Mg3(PO4)2 1 mole Mg3(PO4)2
