COMBINATIONS

I. Learning Module 3
II. Topic:

-Combinations

III- Introduction:
How you ever wondered how counting of arrangements, groupings which
involve very large numbers in complex situations and chances of events to happen
are to be done? This module focuses on how they should be accomplished. The
fundamental counting techniques, permutations are to be explored and covered.
These concepts and skills will equip you to come up with conclusions which help in
making sound decisions.
This lesson will help you develop the concepts of combination and to compute
for the possible outcomes based on the concepts of combination. In this lesson,
you will know the relationship between permutation and combination. You will also
use interactive videos and references for better understanding and fun learning

IV- Objectives:

- Illustrate the combination of objects;

- Derive the formula for finding the number of combinations of n objects
taken r at a time; and
- Analyze situations involving combination of objects.

Indoor Plants Make You Feel Better

Houseplants are not just for their visual beauty but also good for your
health. They release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide which is essentially the
opposite of what we do when we breathe. Thru this, it freshen up the air and
eliminates harmful toxins. Extensive research by NASA has revealed that
houseplants can remove up to 87 percent of air toxin in 24 hours. Studies have
also proven that indoor plants improve concentration and productivity (by up to 15
percent!), reduce stress levels and boost your mood — making them perfect for
not just your home but your work space, too.

To get the such benefits, a plant shop offers a set of 3 different kinds of
plants at a discounted rate. They have an aloe vera, jade plant, lavender, zebra
plant and rosemary to choose from.

What are the possible sets of selections are there? Would the arrangement
matter in this kind of situation? What would be the formula to find the total number
of possible sets of selections?

 What previous knowledge can we apply to be able to know how many total
possible arrangements are there?
 Does it make sense to have such number of possible set of plants offered
by the shop?
 In this situation, do you have to consider the arrangement of the plants?
 How do you think we can we use our knowledge on fundamental counting
principle and permutation in this situation?

FIRM UP:
Consider the given situation where the shop has 5 varieties of plants (aloe
vera, jade plant, lavender, zebra plant and rosemary) and offers discounted
rate for a set of 3.

Applying our knowledge on fundamental counting principle and permutation, we

can get the total number of possible arrangements.

There are 60 possible arrangements but take note that a set of 3 plants
having aloe vera, jade plant and lavender, is just the same with having jade plant,
lavender, and aloe vera.

aloe vera, jade plant and lavender jade plant, lavender, and aloe vera

As we analyze, we see that arrangement in this particular situation does not

matter. The selection made from a group of items without regard to their order is
called COMBINATION. Therefore, from the total number of possible
arrangements, we divide it by the number in which 3 plants can be arranged,
which is given by 3!.
Example 1:

Consider the letters A, B, C, D and take three letters at a time without

repeating any of the letters. a. if order is significant b. if order is not significant
Solution:

a. If order is significant, we have

possible arrangements
of 3 objects.

ABC ABD ACD BCD

ACB ADB ADC BDC

BAC BAD CAD CBD

BCA BDA CDA CDB

CAB DAB DAC DBC

CBA DBA DCA DCB

b. If the order is not significant, we have the following groups of 3 objects.

ABC ABD ACD BCD

There are only 4 out of the 24 selections that are observed.

Example 2: Solve for the following:

Example 3:
William Shakespeare wrote 38 plays that can be divided into three genres. Of the
38 plays, 18 are comedies, 10 are histories, and 10 are tragedies.

a. How many different sets of exactly 2 comedies and 1 tragedy can you
read?

b. How many different sets of at most 3 plays can you read?

a. You can choose 2 of the 18 comedies and 1 of the 10 tragedies. So, the
number of possible sets of plays is:

b. You can read 0, 1, 2, or 3 plays. Because there are 38 plays that can be
chosen, the number of possible sets of plays is:

MULTIPLE EVENTS: When finding the number of ways both an event A and an
event B can occur, you need to multiply, as what you see in Example 3(a). When
finding the number of ways that event A or event B can occur, you add instead like
in Example 3(b).

VIII- Self – check test/ Reinforcement Activity

TASK 2: KAYA KO TO!

A. Practice and Application I (1-6)

B. Pactice and Application II no. 8 (a-d)

DEEPEN:

TASK 3:
A. Read and analyze then solve what is asked.
1. How many different committees of 4 people can be formed from a pool of 7
people?
2. In how many ways can Tony choose three books from a list of 8 books?
3. In how many ways can be a coach select the first five from 12 players?

B. Puzzle Solver:
To find the answer, solve for the value of the given combination.
Cross out the boxes that contain the answer. The remaining boxes will spell
out the answer to the question.
What is the key to a true friendship?

Objective: Solve for the value of the combination using the formula.

_____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____

During the pandemic, the government implemented a law that persons ages
below 21 and above 60 are not allowed to go out and you are one of them. To stay
safe, you just stay at home and performed many activities/tasks to prevent
boredom and anxieties. Out of those activities, select 3 and explain why you chose
that 3 activities or tasks.
