JDS-G173.1
Specification for Port with O-ring Seal in Truncated
Housing

1 Scope

This part of JDS-G173 specifies dimensions for metric ports for use with adjustable and nonadjustable
stud ends shown in JDS-G173.2, and JDS-G173.3.

Ports in accordance with this part of JDS-G173 may be used at working pressures up to 63 MPa for
nonadjustable stud ends and 40 MPa for adjustable stud ends. The permissible working pressure
depends upon materials, design, working conditions, application, etc.

For threaded ports and stud ends specified in new designs hydraulic fluid power applications, only
JDS-G173 (SAE J2244, ISO 6149) shall be used. Threaded ports and stud ends in accordance with
ISO 1179, ISO 9974 and ISO 11926 (SAE J1926) shall not be used for new designs in hydraulic fluid
power applications.

APPROVED FOR SUPPLIER DISTRIBUTION JDS-G173.1
3 Definitions

For the purposes of this part of JDS-G173, the definitions given in ISO 5598 shall apply.

4 Port Size

The ports shall be specified by JDS-G173.1 and the thread size, separated by a colon, for example,
JDS-G173.1: M18 X 1.5.

5 Requirements
5.1 Dimensions.

5.1.1 Ports shall conform to the dimensions given in Figure 1 and Table 1.

5.1.2 When a port is cut into a surface finished prior to the port contour operation, the depth of the
standard port spotface shall not exceed 0.5 mm. The minimum depth of the spotface will be the minimum
depth necessary to clean up the surface to the specified diameter.

5.1.3 If a pre-spotface is used, port spotface location dimensions shown on the drawing apply to the
port spotface surface.

5.2 Deviations from SAE J2244/1, or ISO 6149-1.

5.2.1 The spotface surface texture requirement has been eliminated. This surface is not used for
sealing purposes when the port is used with O-ring seal fittings. The port must still have a matched
spotface or be in a machined surface. This ensures an appropriate sealing surface for the fitting.

5.2.2 The circular runout tolerance for the sealing face diameter has been increased to 0.25 mm from
0.1 mm to accommodate the manufacturing process capability. This is the same tolerance SAE J1926
specifies for inch O-ring ports.

5.2.3 A tolerance of +2 mm has been placed on the spotface diameter. This establishes limits for
control of the manufacturing process.

5.2.4 The minimum tap drill depths have been increased to allow the use of semi-bottoming taps.
SAE J2244/1 and ISO 6149-1 have tap drill depths based on the use of bottoming taps.

5.2.5 The limits for the hole size prior to tapping have been added. These limits are equal to the minor
diameter limits for the corresponding ISO 261 internal threads Class 6H.

5.2.6 The maximum positive tolerance for the sealing face diameter has been increased to 0.15 mm
from 0.1 mm to accommodate the manufacturing capability. This is the same tolerance SAE J1926
specifies for inch O-ring ports.

5.2.7 The port identification has been made optional to accommodate the manufacturing capability.

5.3 Identification (optional). Each port in accordance with this part of JDS-G173 should be identified
by a raised ring per Figure 2 and Table 2, or by permanently marking “metric” next to the port, or
by a permanent identification label on the component to read “ISO 6149 metric”.

6 Test Methods

Ports shall be tested along with stud ends per the test methods and requirements in JDS-G173.2 and
JDS-G173.3.
