The 5 cm novel is written by Donny Dhirgantoro firstly published in Mei
2005 and has been published 29 times until now. The novel tells about the
characters living their lives and their adventure climbing the Mt. Mahameru. This
research focuses on EQ value and character education in 5 cm which can be
motivation to achieve dreams of life. The writer hopes this research will give
ideas about how to make a quality literary work.
The question of this research how is character education and EQ value in 5
cm by Donny Dhirgantoro. the research is aimed to know and describe EQ value
and character education in 5 cm by Donny Dhirgantoro. This research uses
qualitative method. The data of the research is the content of 5 cm, either the
narration or the dialog of the characters in the novel. The technique of data
collection for this research used the card of data. The writer collected and wrote
the data in the card of data. There are three steps in analysis data, they are data
reduction, data presentation, and conclusion.
In conclusion, there are five elements of EQ value in 5 cm by Donny
Dhirgantoro, they are (1) self awareness, it involves (a) self to realize fault and
has will to improve self, (b) to realize and know what we feel, (c) to realize the
weakness and think it, (d) to realize the excess, (e) be confident, and (f) to realize
the position of self in a situation to make decision; (2) self regulation, it involves
(a) the ability of self control, (b) be reliable, (c) circumspection, (d) adaptability,
(e) innovative; (3) motivation, it involves (a) the encouragement of achievement,
(b) optimism; (4) empathy, it involves (a) ability to understand other, (b) to
improve other, and (c) service orientation; (5) social skill, it involves (a)
communication ability, (b) conflict management, (c) leadership, (d) build
relationship, (e) collaboration and cooperation, and (f) team ability. There are 12
character education values in 5 cm, they are: (1) respect, it involves (a) respect to
self showed by healthy lifestyle, (b) respect to others showed by being friendly
and polite, (c) respect to environment showed by being hygient and protect the
environment and (c) respect to country showed by being proud and love country;
(2) responsibility to oneself, (b) responsibility to others, (c) responsibility to
family, (d) responsibility to Allah, and (e) responsibility to country; (3) honest; (4)
fair; (5) tolerance; (6) wise; (7) self-discipline; (8) help each other; (9) care each
other; (10) cooperation; (11) courageous, it involves physical courage that be
courageous to work hard without feeling tired, and moral courageous that is (a)
dare to admit mistakes, (b) dare to take criticism, and (12) democracy that is (a)
able to express your own idea, but still respect to others, (b) being open and
listening to others opinion.
