How do local bookstores survive against Amazon? I LOVE books!

They are so
interesting, and I normally get my books from Amazon. To help answer my question, I looked
online for things to help me learn about Amazon and went to a local bookstore! The bookstore I
went to was called Atlanta Vintage Books, and it had all kinds of books. In this paper, you will
see what I learned.

First, I interviewed the owner of the bookshop. Her name is Jan Bolgla, and here are
some of the questions and answers from that interview.

1. How do you survive against Amazon? The books are less expensive because they are
used. They have books that were published a long time ago and are not being published
anymore, so they can find books here that are nowhere else. They also sell online, even
through Amazon!
2. What are the biggest differences between the store and online stores? You can browse
in person. It also has a lot of space so you can social distance. You can see books you
never thought you would want! (That is cool!)
3. Whom else do they compete with? They do not really want to compete with other
bookstores. They just want people to get reading, but they compete with other
bookstores when it comes to staying open.

I also looked online for facts about Amazon and how it got so big. They helped me
understand Amazon a bit more. Because Amazon had a nearly endless warehouse space, it
could hold more books than physical bookstores, so buyers had more choices on books.
Amazon also had lower prices on books, which made more people want to go to Amazon.com.
That gave Amazon the ability to have more consumer items at lower prices and made people
want to come back. Then, in 2000, Amazon launched Marketplace, letting other bookstores and
sellers put their stock on Amazon. So now other companies can use Amazon’s online space, so
people can buy their things on the internet (just like our local bookstore does today!). Amazon
Prime today has about 112 million paying members, and is one of the largest paid memberships
in the world. Buyers can get orders faster, and now there is another obstacle for other sellers.

This gave me more background information about Amazon, so I could see how my
question works. Amazon grew so fast because it was online. But some people like looking and
trying on things in person. Some reasons my local bookstore survives is because: there is a
special feeling just being there, you can browse and find books that seem interesting to you that
you didn't know existed, they have used books which are less expensive, they have unique
books that are out of print or signed, and many bookstores will also sell online.

So how do local bookstores survive? Local bookstores survive by having things that
nowhere else has. It also gives it something special, that shopping online does not have. You
can find books you might never have known about! You can, in some bookstores, even just sit
and read. You can look into books of all sorts and see if you might like them. For some people,
it makes them happy. That is how local bookstores survive against Amazon.
