1. Basics of Du’aa
“You call. I Respond!”
“And when My servants ask you, [O
Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I ۖ‫ك ِعبَ ِادي َع ِِن فَِإِِن قَ ِريب‬ َ َ‫َوإِ َذا َسأَل‬
‫ان ۖ فَ ْليَ ْستَ ِجيبُوا ِِل‬ِ ‫َّاع إِ َذا دع‬ ِ ‫الد‬ ‫ة‬‫و‬ ‫ع‬ ‫د‬ ‫يب‬ ِ‫أ‬
‫ُج‬
am near. I respond to the invocation of
the supplicant when he calls upon Me.
ََ َ َْ َ ُ
َ ‫َولْيُ ْؤِمنُوا ِِب لَ َعلَّ ُه ْم يَ ْر ُش ُدو‬
So let them respond to Me [by
﴾١٨٦﴿ ‫ن‬
obedience] and believe in Me that they
may be [rightly] guided.”
(Surah al Baqarah 2: 186)
‫َن اللَّ هَ ُه َو يَ ْقبَ ُل الت َّْوبَةَ َع ْن ِعبَ ِاد ِه‬

َّ ‫أَََلْ يَ ْعلَ ُموا أ‬ Do they not know that it is Allah who
accepts repentance from His servants and
‫الرِح ُيم‬ َّ ِ receives charities and that it is Allah who is

What more do you want?
Two of the most beautiful attributes of
Allah are associated with His nearness to
man: All-Hearing, The Responsive! ِ ‫إِ َّن رب لَسميع الد‬
“ ‫جعاء‬
These two names precisely add ُ َ َ
great significance and meaning to the Indeed, my Lord is
perfectly related attributive: Al Qareeb: the Hearer of supplications ”
‫إنَّهُ ََِسيع قَ ِريب‬
(Surah Ibrahim 14: 39)
“Indeed, He is Hearing and near”

(Surah Saba: 34: 50)
‫إِ َّن َرب قَريب جُِّميب‬

“Indeed, my Lord is near and responsive”
(Surah Huud 11: 61)
Ask with firm belief and hope

»‫ب َغافِ ٍل ََل ٍه‬ ٍ ‫اَّللَ ََل يَستَ ِجيب ُد َعاء ِم ْن قَ ْل‬

“The Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said “Call upon Allah while you
are assured of being answered, and know that Allah does
not answer a supplication which comes from a careless
and inattentive heart.” Reference

The Power of Du’aa
Du’aa is conversation with Allah, our Creator, our Lord, our
Master, the All Knowing, the All Powerful.
Du’aa is the most uplifting, liberating, empowering, and
transforming conversation a person can ever have.
We turn to Him because we know that He alone can lift our

sufferings and solve our problems.
We feel relieved after describing our difficulties to our Creator.

We feel empowered after having communicated with the
Almighty.
We sense His mercy all around us after talking to the Most
Merciful. Note: One can make du’aa in
any language; however, taking
We get a new commitment to follow His path for that is the effort to make du’aas in Arabic
only path for success. is better.
We feel blessed with each such commitment.

He has supplicated Allah using

supplicated by this Name, He
answers, and when asked by this
“O Allah, I ask You, as You are the Owner of praise, Name, He gives.”
there is none worthy of worship but You alone, You
have no partner. You are the Giver of all good. O
Creator of the heavens and the earth, Owner of
majesty and honor. O Living and Everlasting One.”

Send Blessings upon the Prophet & then Ask Allah whatever you want
Al-Tirmidhi (3476) narrated that Fadaalah ibn ‘Ubayd (RA) said:
Whilst the Messenger of Allah (sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam) was
sitting, a man came in and prayed and said, “O Allah, forgive me ‫احلُ ْس َ َٰن فَ ْادعُوهُ ِِبَا‬
ْ ُ‫ََسَاء‬
ْ ‫األ‬
ْ ِ
‫ه‬ َّ
‫ل‬ ِ‫َول‬
and have mercy on me.”
The Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said, “You have been too hasty, O
worshipper. When you have prayed and are sitting, praise Allah as “And to Allah belong the best
He deserves to be praised, and send blessings upon me, then call names, so invoke Him by them”
(Surah al Araaf 7: 180)

According to another version (3477): “When one of you prays, let
him start with praise of Allah, then let him send blessings upon the
Prophet, then let him ask whatever he likes after that.” Then
another man prayed after that, and he praised Allah and sent
blessings upon the Prophet (sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam) The
Prophet (sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam) said: “O worshipper, ask

Adhkaar (‫)أذكار‬
One of the Treasures of Paradise
‫اَل اح ْو ال او اَل قُ َّوة ا‬ “O Abdullah bin Qais! Shall I teach you a

sentence which is from the treasures of
Paradise? ( It is):
‫ِإَلَّ ِباهلل‬ ‘Laa Hawla Wa Laa Quwwata il-laa-Bil-Laah”’.
(There is neither might nor power
except with Allah) ”

If anyone says three times: "In the name

of Allah, when Whose name is mentioned
nothing on Earth or in Heaven can cause ‫ض‬ ْ

harm, and He is the Hearer, the Knower"
he will not suffer sudden affliction till the ِ ‫الس‬

There is none who can bestow all these except You.

Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve
[lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the
“O Allah! Make the new moon rise on us with day He created the heavens and the earth; of these,
security, faith, safety and Islam. (O Moon!) four are sacred. (Surah Tawbah 9: 36)

Etiquette during Fast
Abu Hurairah (R.A) reported that the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said:
“When any one of you gets up in the morning in the state

of fasting, he should neither use obscene language nor
do any act of ignorance. And if anyone slanders him or
quarrels with him, he should say:
‫صائِم‬
َ ِ
‫ِن‬ِ‫إ‬ ‫م‬ِ‫إِِِن صائ‬
َ
" I am fasting, I am fasting."
At Iftaar: Breaking the Fast

Note: Iftaar Time is one of those times during which du’aas are
accepted by Allah. Try to take time to make a lot of du’aas for
yourself, your family, the community & the world at large.
Iftaar at someone’s place:
‫ َوأَ َك َل طَ َع َام ُك ُم‬، ‫الصائِ ُمو َن‬ ‫ك‬‫د‬َ ‫ن‬ ِ

‫ت َعلَْي ُك ُم الْ َم َالئِ َك ُة‬ َّ
ْ ‫صل‬ َ ‫ َو‬،‫ْاألَبْ َر ُار‬
‘May the fasting break their fast in your home, and may
the dutiful and pious eat your food, and may the angels
send prayers upon you.’ Reference

‫َوا ْغ ِف ْر ََلُْم َو ْار َمحْ ُه ْم‬
‘O Allah, bless for them what You have provided them,
and forgive them, and have mercy on them.
This is a general Du’aa to be said while eating as guest at someone’s place
During Laylatul Qadr Nights

It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah (R.A) that when the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬went to bed
every night, he would hold his hands together and blow into them, and recite
into them Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad, Qul a’oodhu bi rabbil-falaq and Qul
a’oodhu bi rabbin-naas. Then he would wipe them over whatever he could of
his body, starting with his head and face and the front of his body, and he
would do that three times.”.

Abu Hurairah (R.A) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Peace be sal-lal-

(or dust off) his bed because he does not know what might have fallen on it after
he had left it. Then he should recite: ‘Bismika Rabbi wadha’tu janbi, wa bika
arfa’uhu, in amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi
‘ibadakas-saliheen’.
With Your Name, my Lord, I place my side (upon the bed) and with Your Grace I
will raise it up. If You withhold my soul (cause me to die), have mercy
on it but if You let it go (let me live), guard it against which You
guarded Your pious slaves.”

Falaah (hasten to salvation) here you should say:
Laa ḥawla wa laa quwwata illaa bil-laah.
Then, send Blessings upon the Prophet
Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬and say this Du’aa of Adhaan O Allah , Lord of this perfect call and established prayer.

Walking to the Masjid
O Allah, place light in my heart, and on my tongue light, and in my ears light and in my
sight light, and above me light, and below me light, and to my right light, and to my left
light, and before me light and behind me light. Place in my soul light. Magnify for me
light, and amplify for me light. Make for me light and make me a light. O Allah, grant me
light, and place light in my nerves, and in my body light and in my blood light and in my
hair light and in my skin light.1
[O Allah, make for me a light in my grave... and a light in my bones.]

Upon returning recite the same again and then add the undermentioned words: We return repentant to our Lord,

Allah is Great. Allah is Great. Allah is Great. Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never
have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord we are returning. O Allah, we ask You on this our journey for
goodness and piety, and for works that are pleasing to You. O Allah, lighten this journey for us and make its
distance easy for us. O Allah, You are our Companion on the road and the One in Whose care we leave our family.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from this journey's hardships, and from the wicked sights in store and from finding our
family and property in misfortune upon returning.

Allah, Allah is my Lord, I do not associate anyone & anything as partner with Him. Reference

over me is just.
I ask You by every name belonging to You which You

named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You “And I entrust my affair to Allah”
(Surah Ghafir 40: 44)
taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in
‫إََِّّنَا أَ ْش ُكو بَثِي َو ُح ْزِِن إِ ََل اللَّ ِه‬

the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the
Qur’an the spring of my heart and the light of my breast,
and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my
anxiety.”
“I only complain of my suffering and
According to the hadeeth, when anyone is afflicted my grief to Allah”
(Surah Yusuf 12: 86)
with much distress & botheration, and makes this
du’aa, Allah will replace his grief with joy and relief.

forgiveness
O Allah! Forgive me - 1
Say ‫َستَ ْغ ِف ُرهللا‬
ْ‫أ‬ in a day more than 70 or 100 times:
Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬saying:
" By Allah! I ask for forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance
more than seventy times a day.“ Reference

‫َربَّنَا ظَلَ ْمنَا أَن ُف َسنَا َوإِن ََّلْ تَ ْغ ِف ْر لَنَا‬

"Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not
forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be
among the losers.“ (Surah al Araaf 7: 23)

“O Allah! You are my Lord, there is none worthy of worship in truth except You, You created me

in You from the evil that I have committed. I acknowledge Your favour upon me, and I confess
all my sins to You, so forgive me. Verily no one can forgive sins except You”.

Note: This is not the exact wordings found in the hadeeth ; however there is
ْ ُ nothing wrong in making this du’aa because the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said, “When Allah
wishes good for a person, He makes him understand the religion”.

following: 'O Allah! I seek Refuge with Your Perfect Words from every
devil and from poisonous pests and from every evil, harmful, envious

‫بسم هللا الرمحن الرحيم‬

‫الم َعلى َر ُسولِِه األ َِمني‬

‫ِإَلَّ ِباهلل‬ ‘Laa Hawla Wa Laa Quwwata il-laa-Bil-Laah”’.

except with Allah) ”

Abu Hurairah (R.A) reported that the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“When any one of you gets up in the morning in the state

‫ت‬ ‫ع‬ ِ ‫ك اليت و‬

،‫ َِب ِرْك ََلُْم ِِف َما َرَزقْ تَ ُه ْم‬،‫الله َّم‬ ُ

‫اللَّ ُه َّم أ َِج ْرِِن ِم َن النَّا ِر‬

‫َر ِب ِزْدِِن َوقَ ًارا‬ My Lord! Increase me in dignity Reference

O Allah! You are sufficient for me!
