The PMUs were placed before the rectifier (station 1) and after the inverter (station 2) because

a PMU needs a three-phase signal in order to measure magnitude, phase and frequency of a
three-phase system. Therefore, there are only two places in which a PMU can be placed
(before the rectifier and after the inverter). Taking into account that every single station needs
two PMUs (one for voltage and one for current). Moreover, placing the PMUs into those places
allows us to measure the distortion caused by the rectifier and the inverter, and the effect of
the transition line between them.
