Prologue Quick Write 3/30

The play is going to be about two lovers who are unable to get together due to their families'
feud. The feud was so bad that normal citizens got involved and ended up dying due to it. The
feud had lasted years and it only ended when two lovers took their own lives when they realized
they couldn't be with each other. The two lovers were from opposing families. Their families
finally realized that the feud only brought pain and decided to end it. Some important info is that
this story takes place in Verona, Italy and the play is 2 hours. I wonder how long it took for the
two lovers to fall in love with each other and how the feud started between the families. The play
is going to be about the families’ rage with each other and how the death of their children ended
the ancient feud.

Romeo and Juliet Act 1 Movie vs Text:

How did the movie version compare to the text? Was anything left out or changed in the movie?
Why do you think they would make those changes? How did watching it acted out deepen or
change your understanding of the play? (QW -12 lines or more)

The movie version is much more brief and lacks detail that text has. The scene where a servant
was sent to deliver invitations and asked Romeo and Benvolio to read the list of participants for
the party was left out of the movie. Another thing taken out the movie was when Romeo was
describing Rosaline and how it would be a waste if she “starved herself of sex”. This was a
really ignorant remark by him and it would make viewers see Romeo as less of a good guy
since all that’s on his mind is sex. Although the movie lacked pivotal information, watching it
acted out allowed me to understand the play much better. I could figure out what some lines
meant through context clues. I do wish that the movie could have included all the details in the
play because it would be as close to what Shakespeare actually wrote.

Monday Check-In 4/5

Love is a decision you make, not something that happens to you.

I agree with the statement because emotions are always constantly changing. Love is
something that is built through time and effort. Loving someone requires you to choose to
forgive and let go of some expectations because love is a decision. When love is treated as a
decision, control is given to you. The initial feelings people have for each other fade extremely
fast after the honeymoon phase. It requires work and commitment to keep the love alive
between the two. Love is all about choices. There will be times when people would rather act in
an unloving or selfish way. People will not always feel attracted to their partner. People will not
always want to deal with the drama and problems. There will be times when people would much
rather go out with their friends then be there for their partner when they need them. And in all
these moments a decision is made: do you choose to love or not? And once you answer this
question, you know exactly what to do. We choose to see the good, ignore the petty, look for
what we could do for our partner, and remember why we love our partner.
