4. FIRST AID MEASURES

FIRST AID Swallowed: If swallowed do NOT induce vomiting. If casualty is alert and
conscious rinse mouth thoroughly with water. Seek medical advice.

Eyes: If in eye, irrigate immediately with copious amounts of water for

Inhaled: Move casualty to fresh air. Seek medical advice immediately if

adverse symptoms such as chest tightness, respiratory irritation, coughing or
breathing difficulties develop. If breathing has stopped apply artificial
respiration.

First Aid Facilities: Have eyewashes, safety showers and normal wash room

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

EXTINGUISHING This product is a combustible solid, but flammable and potentially explosive
MEDIA when present in air as fine a dust. Use water spray, dry chemical, foam or
carbon dioxide.

HAZARDOUS Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, irritant and acrid vapours and fumes
COMBUSTION of unknown composition.
PRODUCTS

PRECAUTIONS FOR Partial combustion will generate dense smoke. Dampen down any dust with
FIRE FIGHTERS water spray as it may form an explosive mixture with air. Wear full protective
equipment including a self-contained breathing apparatus. CAUTION: A very
slippery film will form with water. Prevent run-off of fire fighting medium from
entering sewers, drains or waterways.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

EMERGENCY Isolate hazard area, increase ventilation and restrict access. Remove all sources
PROCEDURES of ignition. Take steps to reduce dust generation - material is capable of
producing explosive mixtures with air.

CLEAN UP Small Spills: Wear suitable respiratory protection. Use a dry cleaning
PROCEDURE procedure and avoid generating dust. Sweep or vacuum up the product and
place in sealable containers. Label the containers to ensure appropriate disposal.

Large spills: CAUTION: A very slippery film will form with water. Wearing
the personal protective equipment listed in Section 8 use a dry clean-up
procedure. Vacuuming is the preferred method. Guard against electrostatic
discharge. Alternatively, sweep up product with a broom/shovel. Take steps to
minimise generation of sparks and airborne dust - material is capable of
producing explosive mixtures with air. Place contaminated material in suitably
labelled, disposable containers.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

PRECAUTION FOR Practice sound industrial hygiene. Remove contaminated clothing and
SAFE HANDLING protective equipment and wash hands before work breaks and at the end of a
shift. Minimise exposure by always wearing the recommended personal
protection equipment (See Section 8) when handling this substance. Do not
smoke in the work area. Electrostatic charges may accumulate during handling;
ensure that all equipment is properly grounded. Avoid dust generation - material
is capable of forming explosive mixtures with air. Avoid breathing dust.

STORAGE Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated place. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight,
sources of heat or ignition. Substance is hygroscopic – ensure containers are
sealed. Store away from incompatible materials (see Section 10). Protect against
physical damage.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

EXPOSURE An Australian exposure limit has not been assigned by NOHSC for this
STANDARDS substance. However a blanket TWA for non-hazardous dusts not otherwise
classified has been set at 10 mg/m3 by NOHSC.

BIOLOGICAL No biological limits allocated.

LIMIT VALUES

ENGINEERING Use only in naturally well ventilated areas or with general mechanical exhaust
CONTROLS ventilation. Wherever possible, maintain particle concentrations in the air not
just only below exposure standards, but endeavour to reduce them as low as
practicable using supplementary local extraction ventilation.

PERSONAL The PPE listed below is a general guide only. Personal protective equipment
PROTECTION must be selected for each specific work environment. Final choice will depend
EQUIPMENT on the quantity used, equipment used, how the substance is processed and on
airborne concentration present. The suitability of each PPE to this substance
should then be ascertained with the respective supplier.

Under good ventilation and condition of ordinary use, wear chemical safety
goggles, rubber (any type) or PVC gloves, long sleeved overalls and work boots
and a Class P1 dust mask. In case of a large spills or when working in confined
spaces where dust is generated and airborne dust concentrations are unknown
increase respiratory protection by using a AS/NZ 1716 compliant full-face
cartridge type respirator fitted with a class P3 particulate filter (for selection
guidance see AS/NZ 1715). ). If the respirator is the sole means of respiratory
protection, use a full-face air supplied respirator.
