Constructing a Task Scenario

(G.R.A.S.P.S.)

At the end of the week, the students are able to: (based on mapping of standards and LCs per MELCS)

 solves a system of linear equations in two variables by (a) graphing;

(b) substitution; (c)elimination.

Goal:
Your goal is to write an article about the rising cost of a college education in the
Bicol Region from 2010-Present.

Role:
You are a campus journalist who is tasked to write an article that might help
incoming freshmen students with their choice of school in college.

Audience:
Your target audience is your classmates and the upcoming freshmen students at
your school.

Situation:
As a campus journalist, you have been tasked with writing an article about the
rising cost of obtaining a college education from 2010-Present at different types of
colleges in the Bicol Region. To be able to write the article you first need to collect and
analyze data on the cost of a college education from 2010-Present from at least three
chosen college institutions. You will be creating equations to represent your data and
solve these equations by graphing, by using the substitution and elimination method.

You will provide a short (500 - 750 words max) article on the rising cost of a
college education. It is recommended that you choose schools that are relevant to you.
Are there schools that you might consider attending in the future that you might
consider researching?
You will also need to provide your audience your analysis (solutions) so that
he/she can check your work and verify if it is correct and reliable. Below is a
recommended process for completing this task.

Part 1. Collect and research data on the cost of one year at a college or
university (collect data from at least three schools). Costs may include items like tuition,
room and board, books and supplies, food and living expenses, etc.

Part 2. Represent your data through linear equation/s

Part 3. Solve these equations by graphing, using the substitution and

elimination method

Part 4. Write an article about the rising cost of a college education in the Bicol
region.

your guide and additional reference.

Product/Performance and Purpose:

You will create a final article with 500–750 words max but the equations and
graph titles/labels will not be included. In your article you must:

 Explain how you obtain your data and make sure to cite your sources.
 Include graphs and mathematical solutions
 Since your Grade 8 students, make predictions of your costs of college education
(for example, costs of college education 4 years from now)
 Make predictions about the cost of college for another younger member of your
family (could be a sibling, cousin, family friend)
 Conclude the cost of a college education in the Bicol Region

Standards and Criteria for Success:

Your article should:

 be informative
 cite accurate data, graphs, and computations
 provide ideas and prepare incoming college students from the possible cost of
college education in the Bicol Region.
