Week 4: Reflection on Learning

Provide one specific example of how you achieved the weekly objectives. What concepts,
theories, models, tools, techniques, and resources in this week did you find most valuable? What
issues had you not considered before?

As I reflect on this past week, I have learned many important aspects of nursing theories and how
I can apply them to my future role as an advanced practice nurse. One objective I accomplished
was being able to compare and contrast theories for their application to the nurse practitioner role
(CO 4). Learning more about Florence Nightingale’s and Jean Watson’s theories of caring put a
category to values I want to apply to my future practice. These values of caring put the patient as
the focus of heartfelt care that can really motivate them to take control of their healthcare goals.
The concepts I found valuable this week fall under the theory of caring. Without this theory
application to practice, the patient may be left to feel they are on their healthcare path alone. By
implementing valuable ways to integrate nursing theories, we can learn from past experts on
what works best. I had not considered before that there were actual theories that benefit the
patient, promote, and motivate their well-being. One thing I value and will integrate into my
practice is active listening. This alone can help the patient feel validated and help them build a
trust with me.
