Reflection Questions
For today’s activity, you will be reflecting on your thoughts, opinions, and experiences related to
unit 3. Please answer each question in at least 2 paragraphs 4 sentences each, writing in
complete sentences. We will share our answers with the class after we have finished.

1. What did you enjoy about the Gothic Literature unit? What skills or abilities did you gain or
improve, and how did this happen?

I enjoyed how different and unique this genre of literature is with its mad narrators and its
interesting plots. I experimented with more fantasy and horror-themed writing which was
very fun! I improved my writing in general because I learned new gothic elements and I know
the style of gothic writing, helping me become more creative. This happened because we
were assigned gothic writing tasks, and gothic movies and books to watch and read.

2. What didn’t you enjoy about the unit? If you were able to change what you studied, or the
activities you did, how would you change them? Explain why.

I didn’t like the films very as they were lower quality compared to the text. I would probably
skip the films and move on.

3. What struggles did you face during the unit? How did you deal with them and solve your
issues?
I couldn’t understand some vocabulary words in the gothic stories like the monkey’s paw and
the telltale heart so I created a list and searched for their meanings.

4. Which of the ATL skills mentioned below did you most improve? How did you improve it, and
what activities helped you do this?

ATL Skills:

● Make inferences and draw conclusions

● Use and interpret a range of discipline-specific terms and symbols
● Draw reasonable conclusions and generalizations
● Create original works and ideas; use existing works in new ways

I improved the ATL skill, create original works and ideas; use existing works in new ways
because we practiced writing formative gothic short stories to test our understanding of
gothic elements and I can now confidently say I am capable of writing in a new genre of
literature.

5. Which of the ATL skills mentioned below did you least improve? Why do you believe you did
not improve it much? What could have been done differently to help you improve it?

ATL Skills:

● Make inferences and draw conclusions

● Use and interpret a range of discipline-specific terms and symbols
● Draw reasonable conclusions and generalizations
● Create original works and ideas; use existing works in new ways

I least improved in the ATL skill, draw reasonable conclusions and generalizations, because we
had only one surprise summative and I wasn’t focusing too much on the anticipation journal
so next time I would put a lot more effort into it.
