Project 3 Multigenre Persuasive Campaign

For project three, I am addressing the issue of abuse in the medical field. Abuse in the

health industry arises in a variety of ways, from inappropriate and unnecessary prescriptions, to

outward sexual abuse at the hands of doctors and medical professionals. This is a topic that is not

avidly discussed and often overlooked, and, in this writing, I aim to illuminate the issue and

demonstrate the audience the severity and lasting impact of the matter. The two distinct

audiences I am to convey my argument to are prospective or active medical school students, as

well as grade school aged children. Although these two audience differ greatly, I believe their

insight and knowledge of this issue is vital towards a brighter future, minimizing the amount of

abuse occurring in healthcare in the future.

The first genre I will employ is a social media campaign, complete with graphics and

information. This genre aims to target the medical students. In the campaign, I can utilize the

social media platform of Instagram to spread awareness about the issue. In the graphics,

information surrounding medical abuse will be presented, as well as specific cases of abuse

victims. For example, I can take the memoir of Aja Newman, a young woman who was sexually

abused in the emergency room of New York City, and incorporate her story as a sample of the

maltreatment that ubiquitously occurs. Another element that could potentially be utilized in the

campaign is the story of the victims of Larry Nassar, a former United States Gymnastics team
doctor who sexually abused hundreds of girls. Hopefully these memories and statistics grab the

attention of the young adults and inspire them to read more into the campaign. I believe this is a

valuable method of communication as social media is paramount in today’s society. More

specifically, the genre will absolutely reach medical students, which is a young adult age group

that is active on a variety of social media platforms.

The second genre I would utilize to convey my argument is a comic strip. This mode of

communication would allow me to target the grade school audience and inform them about the

abuse occurring in the medical field, as well as teach them prevention techniques. The comic

strips would use kid-friendly language and avoid any inappropriate details. Nevertheless, through

the comic strips, grade school students would learn about prescription safety, as well as the

privileges that doctors hold. A key aspect of the comic strips will be teaching students prevention

techniques, how to maneuver around an abusive doctor, and learning how to be an ethical

medical professional.

Lastly, an Informational video would be a valuable method of discourse for this issue.

Videos are a widespread mechanism that both audiences avidly utilize. An informational video

incorporating all elements from both the social media campaign and the comic strip would serve

as a valuable tool for my argument. In addition, both audiences would be receptive and engaged

with a video like this.
