Universal Design for Learning: The creation of the commercial using iMovie allows for the creation of
authentic products to an audience that cares. Students are given a rubric that allows for self-regulation, but
are allowed autonomy in the design and creation of their commercial. This project also promotes
collaboration.
Lesson idea implementation:
The lesson will involve students creating an original commercial using iMovie to describe one of the causes of
the American Revolution, as stated in the standard. Students will work in pairs to complete a 1:30 minute
long commercial for their assigned a cause. The students will have creative liberty to design their commercial
however they see fit. This project will be introduced after we study the standard SS8H3 in class and students
will have two class periods to work on it. The student pairs will have a rubric checklist of all the requirements
given to them when they start the project and they will be graded based off of that rubric once the project is
due. We will review the projects at the end of the unit as a good assessment review. I will provide
individualized feedback to my students on their rubrics.
Importance of technology: The students would not be able to create a digital commercial without the use of
video file technology like iMovie or Adobe Spark. This technology allows students to adhere to ISTE standards
and demonstrate their knowledge.
Inspiration (optional):

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

The breach of student privacy and the endangerment of students is a real risk if not using the internet safely
and appropriately. To help minimize these risks I would first notify my administration about the lesson idea to
ensure I am following proper policy. Second, I would send an email or hard copy letter home explaining to

parents what we would be doing in class as well as steps I would take to ensure students are protected while
using the internet. Examples of this include not posting student work anywhere other than our class
submission drive, and having students use school laptops or iPads that already have iMovie downloaded on
them under a school username and password. Also, if students want to film themselves in their videos, they
must have their parents sign the consent form.

Reflective Practice: This lesson would allow students to have a break from boring assessments and rather
give them a chance to take creative liberty to show their knowledge. I would have this lesson in the beginning
of our American Revolution unit. This idea could be implemented to address other standards or units of study
as well. Other technology that could further enhance this project is audio files.
