The room we were looking into was full of people and cigarette smoke, and our little man was in the middle of
it all. He was now without his hat and coat, and he was edging his way through the crowd towards the bar.
When he reached it, he placed both hands on the bar itself and spoke to the barman. I saw his lips moving as he
gave his order. The barman turned away from him for a few seconds and came back with a smallish tumbler
filled to the brim with light brown liquid. The little man placed a pound note on the counter.
(i) What was the room the narrator was referring to?

2. Read the following passage carefully and answer any four questions given after it. 4X1=4
The day 18 April 1951 saw the creation of history of sorts in a tiny village named Pochampally of Nalgonda
district when one Mr. Vedire Ramachandra Reddy volunteered to give away 100 acres of his land in response
to Vinoba’s call to do something to help the poor of the village. Influenced directly by the Sarvodaya
Movement of Gandhi. Vinoba Bhave walked across India to persuade landowners to give up a piece of their
land. Vedire Ramachandra Reddy took the lead and later donated another 800 acres to this noble cause, thus
winning to the village, the title Bhoodan Pochampally. The movement ultimately succeeded in pooling 1
million acres of land for distribution among the poor. The largest contribution to Vinoba Bhave’s Bhoodan
Movement, however, came from Raja Bahdur Giriwar Narayan Singh, Raja of Ranka (Garhwa District,
Jharkhand) who donated 1,11,101 acres of his land!
